I had a bizarre experience a few days ago. I'll describe it briefly. Then maybe you can offer some suggestions along the lines of "What should I do now?" and "How could I have handled it better?" My daughter is 12 years old (she'd say almost 13). Her best friend of the last couple of years has been behaving strangely for the last few months. Recently it got much worse. Her mother tried to get her into counseling; the situation still got worse; about two weeks ago the child wa ...

Last night DD#2 (age 17) missed curfew -- by 3 hours. This is a child who has been much worse in the past -- when she was 14 she routinely stayed out very long hours, including over night a few times. Now she seldom misses when she's supposed to be home by more than 1/2 hour. So I wasn't frantically worried, but I also wasn't happy. In many ways I was more frustrated by not knowing where she was, since when I reached the cell phone of the friend she'd said she was with, he said she wasn't there. ...

The role of the home video camera in risky adolescent behavior Two hundred ten introductory psychology students at a western polytechnic university were surveyed to determine the frequency of videotaping risky behavior and the possible personality and social influence mechanisms that underlie such use. 86.2% reported engaging in at least one of the risky behaviors during high school and college, and 51.4% participated in the videotaping of at least one risky behavior incident. Approximately half of students reported that they exaggerated their behaviors while being videotaped. Sensation seeking was positively related to videotaping risky behavior, and there ...

Being overweight refers to an increase in body weight in relation to height when compared to the average standard. Obesity is defined as an excessive amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass.
The average public school student spends more waking hours at school than in the home. The Action for Healthy Kids (2002) believe that the school system has a responsibility to "promote knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among our children that help develop eating and fitness patterns that can improve health, intellectual development, and overall quality of life." Accordingly, teachers, counselors, school officials, and parents play a vital role in shaping a healthy future by providing students with a healthy school environment.
Talking to Your Teens About Sex As I look into the faces of the real teens that come into my office, I frequently see the troubled eyes of those whose lives have been compromised because of the adverse consequences of risky sexual activity. There are many challenges involved in addressing teen sexuality - sex is a very sensitive topic and it is a topic which stirs up strong opinions. Choices that are made without knowledge of potential consequences cannot be considered choices at all. In order to choose, one must know and understand the options.
