Doesn't up open up anything for Morris, but it cures the other problems...Sparks could still wait and go on scholarship in the second semester of 2004-05 in order to open up the schollie for Morris. I've heard that Patrick is willing to do that, so it's in Morris' hands now.
;-) ***** To enable Kentucky to stay in compliance with NCAA recruiting rules, recruit Adam Williams has agreed to attend a prep school.
The long-rumored option became reality this week after UK Coach Tubby Smith met with Williams, the player's father said yesterday.
Tex Williams said his son most likely would attend Fork Union Military Academy for a year and come to UK in 2005.
Williams' decision to attend a prep school allows Kentucky to stay within the limitations of the NCAA's so-called "5/8 rule": No more than five new scholarship players in any one year and no more than eight in any two-year period.
The Wildcats added four freshmen last recruiting year: Shagari Alleyne, Lukasz Obrzut, Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas.
With Williams agreeing to attend a prep school, UK will add four new scholarship players this year: Joe Crawford, Rajon Rondo, Ramel Bradley and Patrick Sparks.
"It's a win-win situation because of Kentucky's situation...," said Tex Williams, a longtime West Virginia high school coach.
"They're really in a bind. I personally feel it'll help not only Kentucky this year with their scholarships, but it will give Adam a full opportunity to fill his maturity level. I really feel the military will be beneficial." Adam Williams, a 6-foot-4 guard from St. Albans, W.Va., committed to UK two years ago after playing well in Smith's on-campus summer camp.
The commitment stunned recruiting analysts. At the time of his commitment, Williams' most notable basketball accomplishment was being named second-team All-Kanawha County as a sophomore.
While recruiting analysts questioned the commitment, the younger Williams improved to the point of being named a West Virginia All-State player as a senior.
Smith, who still may face a problem meeting the "5/8" limitation if prospect Randolph Morris signs witih UK later this spring, presented Adam Williams with the prep school option this week.
Smith met with father and son in a stopover in Beckley, W.Va., on his return trip from Portsmouth, Va., where he watched Gerald Fitch, Cliff Hawkins and Erik Daniels play in an NBA tryout tournament.
After the father and Smith discussed the prep school option, "We put it in Adam's hands," Tex Williams said. "He said, 'Well, if Kentucky feels me coming in a year later will help, I have no problem with it. But I do want to be there.'" With his son agreeable, the elder Williams said he was "100 percent" in support of a prep school. "If Adam balked, I'd have a problem," he said. "All we can go on is our trust in Tubby Smith. What he said was next year (Adam Williams) will be awarded a scholarship." http://www.kentucky.com/mld/heraldleader/sports/8444296.htm

Long predicted, and a smart move for a kid who blossomed late but would probably have been a little lost next year. How do these prep schools work, anyway? Can a player only go to one for one year without losing any eligibility in the NCAA. It sounds like they're basically a minor league system for college teams.
School won't wrap up until sometime after the first week of May, right? We should hear about Mr. Stockton transferring by then, so all will set for Morris, if he wants.

Not exactly.  Even if Stockton transfers, there will still be the 5/8 problem.  KY58 mentioned something about Sparks possible deferring his scholarship until the second semester, but that doesn't sound like something that would fly legally.  Does anyone know if that really would work?  If so, it should also work for Morris to do that instead.  It sounded like his family was in a situation where they could do that.

The NCAA 5/8 rule applies to scholarships.  You could bring in as many walk-ons as you want.  I am sure the thinking was that big name recruits are not going to be willing to give up a scholarship.  It would make more sense for Sparks to pay his own way than Morris because Sparks gets in state tuition.  It's a much better deal than out of state.
If Tubby is able to get Morris because of the use of walk-ons, I predict the NCAA will begin including walk-ons as part of the 5/8 rule.

Some of my UL friends are accusing Tubby of stockpiling. <G> My answer was    SO........
Go Get Morris!

As far as legality goes, a team who puts a kid on scholarship after the first semester of an academic year counts it towards the amount offer the next year. I heard it discussed on VLK the other night. Michael Smith of the Courier brought it up in connection with Sparks.
The in-state tuition cost in much less then the out-of-state fee. Thus, the Sparks possibility...we'll see.

Unless dUKe and UNC use walk-ons in the same fashion, I'd say you are correct...

Stockpiling should have been what UL did this year to make up for Telfair possibly leaving for the NBA.  Now, they're shit of luck for a PG if he does go.  Wouldn't have been the case if they "stockpiled," now would it? ;-) Dude ...

Hmmm...why would UofL be worryin' about what UK is doing anyway?

That would be stupid if they do.  The only reason to make that a rule would be is if schools started doing it a lot.  How many players do you think are willing to walk on in lieu of a scholarship.  Not many.  Not enough for it to become a problem.
Mike

"Ky58" seventit...@bigblue.org

THe NCAA (at times) hasn't let good sound knowledge get in the way of some of their decisions, but I would agree that the walk-on thing won't become a big problem. UK is one of the very few schools that would atract players (capable of getting a D-1 scholarship) to walk-on...

I think the real risk would be that schools would find a way to "take care" of these "walk-ons," following the letter of the rule while working around it. While I hope we can land Morris, certainly this move violates the spirit of the rule.
Jason in Garden Grove, CA ...

"TomTraubertsBlues" silentsaregol...@comcast.net

Maybe, but in my book the spirit of this rule is wrong.  Almost everybody agrees that the 5/8 is dumb, so violating its spirit is sort of like jaywalking.
Mike

"The Dude" bu...@callmethedude.com

It won't be considered "jaywalking" if 10 of the top schools complain, and I'd put money on it that Ga Tech would request an inquiry - I'm sure it's one of their back up plans if Morris does chose UK - get an inquiry, perhaps he's ineligible, and then he goes to Ga Tech after the investigation.  Of course, I'm sure UK already has a contingency and is planning to do this the right way (whatever the "loophole" may be).
A loophole isn't breaking the rules, it's finding a way through the rules without either bending nor breaking them.  ;-) Dude ...
