I'm supposed to give an ESL lesson on the distinction between polite and neutral intonations for yes/no questions in a few days. In examining the coursebook materials, I realized that I don't actually make such a distinction in American English. Apparently intonation conveys a level of politeness in British English, but try as I might, I can't come up with any type of level-of-politeness distinction in my own American English that is communicated by intonation. The problem is: What am I to do? S ...

If I write a text where some words are spelled in American English and some in British English, would that be disturbing for the reader? And can I for example use a British word as lift instead of elevator, but still write realize instead of realise? And what about exprecissions? Is it bad English to mix British and American exprecissions? As it is now, I mix them pretty often. That's beacause here in Sweden we learn us British English in school, but the movies I see, the books I read and the si ...

If this has been exhaustively discussed before in the group, please point me to the relevant spot in the archives. I couldn't think of an efficient search strategy, so I apologize in advance if this is old hat. It is commonly asserted that American English (spelling, vocabulary, idioms) is standard only in North America (and acceptable only to a limited degree in Canada, at that). The international standard remains British English. I doubt this. Despite the fact that England's former colonies co ...

In all of the books so far, no mention is ever made of a "Graduation Ceremony" Is this just a U.S. custom not observed in English Schools? Or is it a separate ceremony held for graduates after the other students have already left, and as such we have not seen this yet through Harry's eyes? Or has JKR just omitted this for reasons unknown? -- My toys! Where are my toys? I can't do this job without my toys!

LDC Catalog Introduction During the 2000-2001 academic year, cadets, staff and faculty members at the United States Military Academy volunteered to participate in a speech data collection project for American English. The goal of the project was to amass recordings from no less than 100 adult speakers (50 males and 50 females) to form a substantial corpus of high-quality read speech. The project was conducted by the Center for Technology Enhanced Language Learning, part of the U.S. Military Academy's Department of Foreign Languages. Many of the 100-plus volunteers who provided the recordings were members of the staff ...

Love of theater paves visit by German teens They were soon joined at their table by Joanne Patton, who is hosting Jonas in her South Hamilton home. Patton, a longtime North Shore Music Theatre board member and lifelong fan of the theater, was amused to learn that the students already were familiar with "The Rocky Horror Show" through its cult-favorite film version. She has never seen it: "I want to be surprised," she said.
Joanne Patton's five children were raised with a deep education in the theater. As an aspiring actress, a young Helen Patton took a job as a singing waitress at the old North Shore theater restaurant. The academy scholarship is named for Dorothea Schoenwasser, a German actress who became the family's nanny during a military stint overseas. She died in Hamilton several years ago.
Hard man in a rocky place July did not begin well for President Musharraf. First there was the sudden eruption of suicide bombings in the North West Frontier province. These killed scores of government troops and severely wounded Musharraf’s interior minister, Aftab Sherpao. Then, on July 6, came an assassination attempt against Musharraf himself – the latest in a series which has included two successive bomb attacks on his convoy, and which left 14 of the general’s entourage dead, but did not touch their target.
Then there were the lawyers. Although rather less deadly than the jihadis, Pakistan’s barristers were in the process of mounting the most serious political challenge to the president since he seized power in 1999. They did this by holding huge demonstrations for the return of democracy. Left to their own devices, the lawyers tended to march in orderly crocodiles beneath their brollies, chanting slogans such as “Save Judiciary, Save Pakistan”. But when attacked by Musharraf’s riot police, they showed they could give as good ...

That Was Nice. I'm back. My hopes of keeping this blog updated while away were shot down by the snail-like pace of the internet stations in Kos. Rest assured, dear reader, this'll be the last time I'm absent for any period of time this year. I finished Shaman's Crossing while away, and it didn't improve much. I won't be purchasing the sequel: 400 pages reading about a characterless character's "trials and tribulations" inside a Hogwarts-style military academy, with hardly any plot development whatsoever, was wasted time enough on my part. I might ...

It's just that we're not publishing what's going on vis-a-vis who's been invited to act on the committee in order to respect the privacy of those who turn down the offer. :) Membership is definitely not intended to be a secret affair in the long run. 25 May 2007 23:01 Anonymous said... Kh2.9- Chapter One: An Introduction Of Heroines (and Heroes) Okay, I really want everyone to read this so here a brief overview: This takes place about a month or so after the end of KH2. The story revolves around a group of kids who live on a very isolated world but outside their city is nothing but a wasteland and Heartless.Their government has told them that there is no outside world, but the main character thinks otherwise. Enjoy! There is an urban legend told in the alleyways of Juno City…about a world that existed long ago… The people of this world had everything and had nothing. ...
College . A college is an institution between secondary school and university, a college of further education and adult education. These institutions were usually called technical colleges, or tech. Recently, however, with the differences in functionality between universities and colleges becoming less clear-cut, and with the phasing out of polytechnical colleges, many people are starting to call such institutions "universities". Many types of institutions have "college" in their names but are not colleges in the general use of the word; Eton College, for example, would be called not a college, but a school, or by its full name. ...
X-Factor v.3, #21/Endangered Species part 3, unofficial spo in X COVER: A man with a glowing red eye and hands that are sending forth tiny lightning bolts of electricity is standing behind Jamie while he's sitting and having a chocolate chip cookie with some milk. The rest of the team is seen in the background. They're all tinted red. Jamie looks at the reader and says, WHAT...? as if he can't understand what the problem is. (Jamie's milk carton proclaims: "Janson's MILK 100% booze free with vitamin D" From what we can see of his cookie bag, I'm guessing that he's ...
