It's all too obvious that feathers and leaves fall hither and yon in the gusty autumn air: But it isn't at all obvious that streamlined bodies such as acorns and lead slugs are subject to the same effects: The variations in the density of that air. They appear to fall straight down; with a uniform acceleration; but like all falling bodies their speed and direction vary depending on the vagaries of the density and currents of the medium they are falling in. Bodies only fall at the same velocity, ...

I have been looking into many reading curriculums used by schools including Guided Reading, the Distar method and phonology. I find many valuable ideas in each, but have difficulty believing that any can be ideal for every child. As a future educator, I worry about my ability to educate every child if I am only able to use one method. How does one teach many children to read at once with the varied multiple intelligences that every classroom encompasses?

Experiments Of Concern When the paper came out, it had been only months since the Sept. 11, 2001, jetliner attacks and the subsequent anthrax-by-mail attacks. And here was a respected group of scientists telling the world that they—and now presumably others—could resurrect a nearly eradicated pathogen without relying on cells. Their revelation's timing bolstered the public's then rapidly growing sensibility that some people on this planet are hell-bent on procuring and applying powerful technologies for the purpose of inflicting injury and death on massive scales.
That the viral synthesis wasn't all that difficult magnified the point. Wimmer's group started with the Internet-acccessible RNA sequence that provided the full genetic characterization of poliovirus, an RNA virus. From that information, the researchers specified corresponding strings of DNA, which they mail-ordered from a biotechnology company. Then, with a commercially available enzyme, they transcribed the resulting DNA construct back to the viral RNA. When they mixed this RNA with a soup of readily available biochemicals, authentic poliovirus particles formed. ...

Waiting To Die: 'Blue Water' Veterans Seek Help Lloyd Patrick Elnicki never asked what the Circle of Life Hospice nurse wrote in her evaluations every day. Secretly, he knew. "I'm dying, aren't I?" he asked his wife, Sharon. "Well, Pat, you're not getting any better," she said. Three years before, the Vietnam veteran was a robust man with pale skin, dark red hair and a goatee. He had a clover tattooed on his back -- for luck. Pat loved to go. He wore a St. Christopher's medallion, the patron saint of traveling, on a silver chain around his neck. He traveled to Colorado, South Dakota, Idaho, ...
The Elnickis filled their Bella Vista home with country decorations, the plush, blue-gray carpet smelling of smoke from the couple's cigarettes. Outside, beyond the sliding glass door, was a flagpole Pat installed, flying the U.S. flag. In 2004, doctors diagnosed Pat with lymph cancer of the neck. He went through surgery and radiation treatment and thought his cancer was in remission. But, at the end of last year, Pat got stomach cramps. Exploratory surgery revealed stomach cancer too widespread for surgery, and in March, he opted out of further treatment. The two cancers left ...

Thumbnails of Atlantis' 7 astronauts The crew of space shuttle Atlantis took scrupulous notes during two of last year's construction missions on the international space station. They'll be expected to accomplish the same challenging tasks. Spacewalking astronauts last year ran into some glitches and had to figure out how to loosen stubborn latches and bolts, how to fold up an obstinate solar array (kind of like folding a wrinkled roadmap) and how to get the solar array's rotary joint to spin. All these are tasks the seven astronauts will tackle during their 11-day mission. "We've had the benefit of learning ...
Life size robotic fly for military surveillance operations Harvard University researchers spent seven years with funding from the U.S. military to develop a life size robotic fly. The US defense chiefs plan to use the life size robotic fly in military surveillance operations. The Lightweight carbon joints allow the robot to mimic the exact movements of a real fly, with wings that flap at 110 beats per second. Professor Robert Wood, of Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, said that the real benefit of the robotic fly is that it's agile, small and from a military ...

Science The word science comes through the Old French , and is derived from the Latin word scientia for knowledge , which in turn comes from scio . ‘I know’. The Indo-European root means to discern or to separate, akin to Sanskrit chyati , he cuts off, Greek schizein , to split, Latin scindere , to split. [6] From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment , science or scientia meant any systematic recorded knowledge. [7] Science therefore had the same sort of very broad meaning that philosophy had at that time. In other languages, including French, Spanish, ...
From classical times until the advent of the modern era, “philosophy” was roughly divided into natural philosophy and moral philosophy . In the 1800s, the term natural philosophy gradually gave way to the term natural science . Natural science was gradually specialized to its current domain, which typically includes the physical sciences and biological sciences . The social sciences , inheriting portions of the realm of moral philosophy, are currently also included under the auspices of science to the extent that these disciplines use empirical methods . As currently understood, moral philosophy ...
