I am soon to be a high school senior and I was considering this Army ROTC scholarship as a way to help pay for college. It pays for 16,000 of your tuition and also gives you an allowance. I am trying to find how how selective this scholarship is. Please tell me if you think I could get one.
I have a 3.3 GPA, 1370 SAT score and soon to be an Eagle Scout. I also run track and have a job at the supermarket. Please if any of you know anything about this then tell me. I really hope I would be able to get this and I would be willing to do all the drills and the 4 years of service after college.

Hmm. I suggest you go to groups.google.com and do an advanced search with author:willd...@my-deja.com and keywords:rotc or group:us.military.army and keyword:rotc.
Myself, I think ROTC is a bad way to pay for college.

Some scholarships only require 90 days active and a longer reserve stint.

(snipage occurs) there you go again, attempting a job you lack the tools for.

Joe, I'd reccomend taking just about anything and everything that William says with a grain (boulder) of salt. He's very anti-military, so you'll need to take that into consideration, as you will the fact that he's never been in and can't make an informed judgement. The only thing I can tell you is that active duty isn't like ROTC, but it's fun. :) The SoldierGrrrl "STRIKE FORCE!" "U.S. Army-We break more shit by 9 am than most people do all day!"

Why dont you try to get into West Point? Apply at least, they pay all tuition. The worst they could say is no. And dont you have to do 4 years active duty and 8 years in the reserves?
Mike Mike2...@REMOVEhotmail.com
You should only be considering ROTC if and only if you have a strong desire to become an Army officer and serve. The fact that it will help pay for college should be only a secondary consideration.

<< Good advice. Also, a plus side to West Point is that, if you don't like it, I think you can resign after your second year. Which means you get about $300K of education and training at taxpayer expense.
(Note I personally think this policy is a piece of crap, but I have no trouble advocate its abuse until it goes away.)

scholarship as a way to help pay for college.<< ROTC can be an excellent choice. However, while the financial / scholarship incentives are decent, your primary desire should be a willingness to become an Army officer for a few years. You don't have to be committed to the Army for a career, but you need to be willing to give it a shot for 4 years.
tuition and also gives you an allowance. I am trying to find how how selective this scholarship is.<< If you have a twisted amoral/Machiavellian streak and a willing female friend, and want even more jack ($$$), when you finally go active duty, consider getting 'married' in name only.
The pay is better, the treatment from command is better. You 'wife' gets free medical from Uncle Sam.
It's probably illegal, but only a moron would get caught. As for the morality, I think the current pay system is morally worse.

More anti-government, but the military is a particularly noxious arm of the government.
I dunno. I think I've been pretty informed, regardless.
It's only fun if you like being exploited or are oblivious to the exploitation.

willd ...@my-deja.com (William Davenant)
Yes, you better check out the 'gotchas' before you do any signing ....
Make sure you check out those court cases. They're really funny.
Anyway, as far as USMA goes, I guess, if you willing to jump off a cliff in the first place, you might as well go for the highest one.
Course, I'd recommend foregoing it altogether. Find another way to do college. Be smart.

willd ...@my-deja.com (William Davenant)
Pretty good advice, actually. But, rather than secondary, it should be more like tertiary etc.
It's not a good way to pay for school, not really a bargain ....

Before you or anyone does that, you might want to check out ...
http://www.west-point.org/service/surveyor/survey101/rawdata.html Numbers 28 and 29 are particularly interesting ... I enjoyed the comment about 'immaturity' ... I still say if people under 21 are too immature to drink liquor, they're too young to be in the military. But, then, it's all about exploitation, isn't it?
http://www.west-point.org/service/surveyor/survey101/q28.html http://www.west-point.org/service/surveyor/survey101/q29.html (N.b., AOG - ***ociation of Graduates) You have to dig a little deep to find out the nitty-gritty about the obligations etc. Interesting. That should be on the home page! ;-) http://www.usma.edu/admissions/moreinfo.asp http://www.usma.edu/admissions/more_obligations.asp And that still leaves some things out I think. Somewhat sparse on details. But, if you're immature, maybe that doesn't bother you? ;-) They do have a pretty web site, I must admit. Army colours and all that. Surprising actually. Something seems to be wrong with their search engine, though.

Good idea about the marriage thing. And as for the officer thing, I would like to do that for 4 years. Then I could decide if i want to continue or go to a civilian job. But I would have a better resume also at the job.

velov ...@aol.com.CanDo (V-Man)
Asking Ziggy for ***istance is like going to Adolph Hitler for Cultural Sensitivity Training. ZiggyPigy has, repeatedly, berated young soldiers for having ordinary problems. She refuses to follow Army guidelines for handling leadership issues, such as correcting a soldier's deficencies, and is abusive.
This newsgroup has several officers of Captain through Colonel in it and NONE have ever praised her or otherwise positively commented on her or about her. There are a number of Senior NCOs and Officers (along with this old time private) that are trying to block her commission for teh good of the service.
A good way to get the info you are looking for without resorting to Ziggy is to call your nearest college with an ROTC program. Ask to speak with a Cadet.
Any Random Cadet would be a FAR better source than Ziggy, who is a disgrace to the Cadet Corps.

Shrek is a troll, and although not very pretty, he's kinda nice.
Only because what's behind those values is bad.

willd ...@my-deja.com (William Davenant)
Only if you're looking from the outside in.
They're all bad, some are just worse than others. I think the reason I have a larger problem with the US versus, say, Australia, is that the US thinks its shit doesn't stink - if you know what I mean. Hypocrisy bugs me. What can I say?
Well, chalk that up to a first rate intellect and, ahem, some experience. ;-) I've been in the government, I know what the people are like, seen how things work ... the nature of the beast if you will.
Course, I've also met all kinds of people, seen the world - as some of you are fond of touting. Being well read helps, too, of course.
Being a basically modest person, I never put too much stock in these.
You just ***ume everyone else is like you in that respect. I mean, who wants to go through life with one, or both arms tied behind ones back? But, of course, it's not true that every else, or, even, most people are like that. Quite the contrary, I'm afraid. I'm rara avis to say the least.
Oh, you mean if you're a thrill-seeker? Hmm, a characteristic of youth?
I mean, that's the upshot of the Army's ***ault on young people - they portray it as exciting, interesting, a good way to gain skills, whatever those might be.
On the other hand, as you partially point out, there's also drudgery, boredom, uselessness etc. And you can get hurt or killed.
The thrill-seekers often seem oblivious to the latter until it's too late.
One of your tops? One must beware of double meanings. ;-) Anyway, it's a nice sentiment, but, of course, for one, it's not universally true. You wouldn't say it for the Soviet Union or China would you? Also, while, yes, it's true I could easily leave the country, that's not true for the vast majority of people, some of whom probably feel the same way I do. I stay because blood is thicker than water, and, frankly, I pay to live here.
I don't think I or anyone else owes the government anything more. If it were free, hmm, then maybe it'd be a different story. Maybe.
