KnoxNews.com Army's new warfare training center preps troops for street fighting August 13, 2000 By Kimberly Hefling, ***ociated Press FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Ground was broken recently on a project that will transform a quiet forest into a mock city to prepare Army soldiers for the modern world of urban warfare.
The high-tech Military Operation on Urbanized Terrain, or "MOUT," site at Fort Campbell will resemble a typical city.
Thousands of soldiers will be trained to battle in a densely populated area.
It will include elaborate sound effects mimicking urban sounds, such as children playing and fighter planes entering and leaving a city.
There will also be mobile pop-up targets of enemy soldiers and civilians.
A video system at the facility will allow post-training reviews.
"It will provide our troops with unmatched realism and tactical scenarios that will better prepare them for combat, and they will be able to conduct this training safely," said Richard A. Cody, commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division.
The first phase will include 19 intact buildings, three buildings in rubble, two rest rooms and an after-action review facility at a cost of $14.4 million.
Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2002.
Funding has not yet been secured for the second phase, which would add nine intact buildings and five rubble buildings at a cost of $10.5 million.
The MOUT site is larger than a similar one that opened last year at Fort Knox.
Army leaders say the urban warfare training centers are necessary as the military engages in more peacekeeping missions like those in Bosnia or Kosovo.
"Our history tells us combat in urban areas is physically hard, dirty, tactical, tough and very lethal," Cody said.
"As we look at the potential hot spots throughout the world today, we know that the battle space of the 21st century will be in and around cities and urban areas." In urban warfare, soldiers also must deal with a higher concentration of civilians, and they need to learn how to interact with the civilians in a battle scenario, said Jim McConville, director of operations for the 101st Airborne Division.
"The enemy will go in there and intermingle with civilians, and we don't want to hurt civilians," McConville said.
The urban centers are necessary as the number of military personnel in the nation shrinks, but the job demands increase, said Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from the 1st District.
"We must give them the tools to get the job done," Whitfield said.
Fort Campbell, on the Tennessee border, has a military population of 23,391.

Depends on who is doing the buying and for what final goal it is intended for.
What you have to realize is , that like many countries in the past that have tried to protect what they believe to be part of there culture , religion and civilization, Serbia has and will try to continue to do so with the Kosovo province of there Country. The USA might be the most powerful military machine in the world, but are your memories short?
What happened in Vietnam and Korea.
Yugoslavia is a strong Military country, for what they have and been through over the years , from World War 1 and 2 and the period of the Cold War.
Never underestimate the opposition it could backfire on you.

Last time I've heard, Sarajevo was in Bosnia-Herzegovina. I didn't write a word about Kosovo.

Does this include m***acreing and expelling ethnic Albanian KosovArs who are trying ot protect THEIR religion, THEIR culture, THEIR Civilization ?
: The USA might be the most powerful military machine in the world, : but are your memories short?
Forgetting about the Gulf, Panama, the 2 US bombings of the Serb army prior to KosovA as well as the utter, *UTTER* butt-kicking of the now-extinct USSR ?
: What happened in Vietnam and Korea.
Korea - A Soviet-instigated invasion by Stalin/Kim Il Sung stopped. The part protected by the US a prospering hi-tech country, the part not protected undergoing famines with deaths in the millions.
Vietnam - Now trying to resume normal ties with the US to counter the influence of regional power, the PRC. This would include cultural, political, technological as well as MILITARY cooperation.
USSR - Instigator of trouble world-wide: Like Dust in the Wind.
: Yugoslavia is a strong Military country, Is that why they got their butts kicked 4 out of 4 the last 10 years ?
Serbia had 800-900 AAA missiles before KosovA, they then shot off about 600-700 and yet only downed (2) NATO planes.
What makes you think they won't get the sh*t bombed out of them the next time ?
: for what they have and been through over the years , from World War 1 : and 2 and the period of the Cold War.
: : Never underestimate the opposition it could backfire on you.
It is an arrogant Serbia which still thinks it can bully its neighbors. It once thought that it could roll over Croatia and BiH in less than a month. They returned home on their tractors.
Now it thinks it can manhandle the Montenegrins,Serbia has another coming to it.

Riiiight. I should be listening to the ever-
dwindling supporters of Serbs instead.
This would include Communists, Neo-Nazis, Cubans, North Koreans, and Iraqis.
But not the Russians, Greeks, or Chinese who seem to have already turned theiir backs on Serbia.

With or without the US and the USSR, the world would have fought the wars anyway. Up until 1972, the majority of Israeli equipment was French, British, and Czech. While S. Africa makes it's own weapons that it used to support wars in Angola, Mozambique, Rhodesia(Zimbabwe), and hold onto Nambia. China and India churned out it's own fair share of weapons as well. And Those Scud Missles Saddam Hussein had/has were bought from China and N. Korea. And the poison gas Saddam Hussein used on the Kurds was bought from Germany.
No in the 1980s a Soviet leader pushed for greater freedoms for the Soviet people, and with greater freedoms the Soviet people soon realized that thier country was bankrupt and couldn't really afford to simply give away military hardware anymore. Russia still however sells huge quantities of military hardware to other nations, Yugoslavia among them.
Maturity and pacifism? You have heard of Chechnya and Dagestan haven't you? You have heard of Russian military sales to Iran either, another of those "mature pacific" nations, right?

Who the **** are you to say where a people should belong or not belong?
"Suzan" druide...@ireland.com
So you have to be a leader or so to say legally where someone belongs and where not? Why are leaders, or governments as a whole, the only ones to say something about this? Isn't it oh so more democratical to let the people speak themselves? Probably the inhabitants are brainwashed by their local governments anyhow, but just to be democratically correct I would say they have the right to SAY what they want to say. (in so far as it doesnt someone harm. It sounds fair enough to say that kosovo albanians should belong into albania. Albanians inhabit Albania. The question only is then if kosovo can be considered as "albanian" or not. In my opinion it is not, but for some it is (and that's the difficult part)).

Ohyes it is oh so easy in the American way. You just go and chop some Indians till they are a very small amount who won't bother you again and put them in reservations as a tourist attraction. Consider then the whole world as American and watch at Europe as one big museum with nice wars where you can make Hollywood B-movies out which are watched by people who don't even bother to have a look in a history book, but will believe the history drawn by Hollywood about Europe.
God bless America and only America, right?
Yuck.

It looks like during his recent trip to Europe, he got his WASP-supremacist *** kicked (instead of kissed, as an anticipated effect of the hard currency he was carrying). Maybe both of his ***es, including the one between his nose and his chin (hint: that's the one that stinks worse).
Or, is it the case that his currency wasn't hard enough? Was it showing the faces of the Premiers or of the Presidents?
Or, horror of horrors, did the previously docile and corruptible native savages of Europe (the only ones he dares to ***ociate with) also lose their awe at the sight of the hitherto almighty dollar?

Significant stuff but stupid ***holes like you miss the point. The idiot claimed Canada attempted to exterminate whole peoples a la Holocaust.
