Seemingly without regard to the nature of a behavior problem, advisors responding to patients pleading for help upon this news group almost without fail initially direct them to a veterinarian. It is true that a serious medical problem might cause behavioral changes, but far more prevalent is that medical problems are caused by continual stress and anxiety endured day after day by dogs who are subject to mistreatment. Stress and anxiety induce excessive production of various hormones, body chemistry is altered and organ and brain damage can follow.
Patients often write detailed descriptions of an aberrant behavior, often including hourly logs of their dog's activity. But an astute behavioral consultant can recognize within the first sentence or two that the aberrant behavior is induced by stress and anxiety. The patients, of course, don't know any better. But advisors here, request detailed descriptions of the aberrant behavior and then dream up training techniques to change the aberrant behavior into something more acceptable to the owner. The fundamental cause of the aberrant behavior, i.e., the stress and anxiety, is unaddressed. It is likely then that other, more serious, aberrant behaviors may plague the owner.
Owners do not usually mistreat their pets with malice. They want a well behaved dog, but they don't know how to raise one that is well behaved.
Owners follow the advice of the puppy guides that are distributed by their veterinarian and that are produced by pet food companies. Others purchase books telling how to raise a puppy, how to train a dog or how to correct behavior problems. These publications teach owners how to treat their pets.
They are the source for the various mistreatments which induce stress and anxiety. The prevalence of aberrant behavior problems is a direct result of the bad advice offered to the public in these publications.
Crating, isolating, tying, scolding, intimidating, screaming, scaring, tricking, bribing, pulling, pushing, dragging, chasing, striking, choking, pinching, glaring, ignoring, growling, emotional vocalization, emotional facial expressions, punishment-all these treatments induce stress and anxiety-aberrant behavior problems follow.
Dogs that are always treated with respect, with kindness, with gentleness, with praise and with positive attention do not become stressed and anxious and as a result they do not develop aberrant behavior problems. This same benevolent treatment is a cure for existing stress and anxiety and aberrant behavior caused by them.
To learn how to raise a stress free dog or to learn how to cure one who exhibits aberrant behavior problems, please read the Puppy Wizard's Wits' End Training Method. This is the only available method for raising and training dogs, of which I am aware, that is consonant with the nature of dogs. Wrong. If the aberrant behavior is a CHANGE from the way the dog normally behaves, then they are advised to first rule out a medical cause before trying to treat it as a behavioral problem.
Dogs can't tell us that they hurt, or they don't feel well. Most of the time the only clue they give is a change in behavior.
It would be irresponsible to try to train a dog out of a behavior that could have a medical cause without first ruling out that the dog is ill. The dog could pay for it with his life.
If he gets a clean bill of health from the vet, THEN you start looking for other causes.

Doctors and veterinarians always recommend medicine as a remedy for any problem. They do not recognize aberrent behavior as being caused by stress and anxiety. Poor owners are sent home with a cure that will not solve their problem. My heart sinks to think of the number of dogs living on prozac and zoloft like drugs.

MY dog has very sensitive hearing, She has trouble dealing with buses, ice cream trucks , garbage day is pretty much a write off. I can't bring her to my husbands work as in the back of the building there is machinery that bothers her. She doesn't even like to walk at night, she gets nervous (I think she hears too much then) Yet, I can vacuum up to her feet and it doesn't bother her.
