Just a quick note regarding John Rosemond's column in today's paper: John Rosemond is a parenting "guru" who writes a syndicated column that appears in my local newspaper.  He is *not* what could be called an AP advocate at all.  At any rate, his column today addressed the Illinois woman whose 5-year-old was taken away by CPS because he was still breastfeeding.  Contrary to what might be expected given his parenting philosophy, he was very critical of what was done in Illinois.  He basically said if a parent is still nursing when their kid is 6, it's *unusual* but not unnatural.  He thinks the government should have kept its nose out of this woman's business.
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting source of "support" for extended breastfeeding.

I wouldn't have thought him to be supportive of extended breastfeeding either.  Sometimes, he's so darn adamant about pushing children to be independent and doesn't seem to take into consideration individual differences in temperaments and abilities.

However, I think he is reflective of a very male cultural point of view (i.e. early independence is Good), and guess which sex has dominated the child psychology field for most of the last century.
MEG Lets see, Schedules and Bottles are Scientific and therefore Good, Cribs are Good (so male can have sexual access to mom), Early Independence is Good (hey, none of that wimpy crying), yada, yada, yada All I can tell you is my wiring tells me all that stuff is crap.

That's funny.  This is exactly what I would have expected from him. It's completely in line with a central tenant of his parenting philosophy, which is that parents know better than experts and the government should stay out of families' business.
IOW, while I certainly wouldn't expect to hear that his own family practiced extended nursing, it's not at all inconsistant for him to support the right of a family who does.

True, but he also has a reputation of being an advocate of authoritative parenting, which strikes me as very un-AP (whom I view as the most vocal advocates of extended nursing).  It was just an observation, anyway.

Oh, absolutely.  No disagreement there.  But one could be very un-AP and still very pro parent's rights, which would include being opposed to the government kidnapping a child simply because the mother breastfeeds.
I'm just pointing out that merely because somebody is not an AP advocate and is an authoritative parenting advocate it does not follow that we can also pigeonhole that person as being anti bfing or in favor of kidnapping children who are part of an extended nursing relationship.
