NY POST...PAGE 6 KATHLEEN Turner is trying to sober up in a Pennsylvania rehab center after falling off the wagon following her successful Broadway run in "The Graduate." Turner, 48, who was recently replaced by "Sopranos" star Lorraine Bracco in the hit play, checked herself into the secluded Marworth facility in Waverly, Pa., on Dec. 3, next week's Star magazine reports. "I want to quit [drinking] for my husband, child and my career," Turner announced when she arrived at the lavish $550-a-day treatment center housed in an 1890s mansion. "I have no problem with alcohol when I'm working. It's when I'm home alone that I can't control my drinking." The Star reports that Turner's husband, Jay Weiss, threatened to divorce her and take custody of their daughter Rachel if she didn't sober up. A puffy-faced, chubby Turner arrived at the clinic solo dressed in faded jeans without makeup or jewelry. Turner's rep, Alan Nierob, did not return calls.

Some women hit the wall at 40.  Turner hit the wall, the floor, the ceiling, the furniture, the doorknobs...
I remember seeing her on "Friends," playing a female impersonator, and wondering who that guy was.

What happened to her voice?  Looking at some of her earliest work, she wasn't nearly as throaty as she sounds today.

Booze, booze and more booze will make you age WAY before your time. Turner fits in that bil. The throaty voice can also be caused by too much drinking. Does she smoke? What a shame. I can think of a few other actors that drinking ruined the looks of.. O' Toole, Vivian Leigh, and Marilyn Monroe to name just a few beauties who were marred by too much drink.

Arthritis and the ***ociated meds, including prednisone also produces these effects, as well as the bloated face described in the article. I think people are being way too harsh and jumping to a few too many conclusions.

yepimwi ...@webtv.net (~spacytracy~)

Wow.  The place I went to was $500 a day, and it was a total hole.  I spent most of my time outside because the place smelled so bad inside.
Guess that extra $50 makes the difference <read sarcasm> Drug and alcohol treatment is the biggest scam going on in America today.  But I digress.....

As can asthma medicines (again with the prednisone)

Vivien Leigh also had manic depression and tuberculosis, poor thing.  The drink was the least of her problems.  As for KT, she has arthritis pretty badly.  The meds she has to take for it don't help one's beauty.

Don't!!  Don't digress!  I would love to start a thread on this.  Some drug/alcohol treament places are awful.  Most people have no idea what p***es for "therapy" in some of these places.  It can get very scary.  Boy, do I know a lot of horror stories....

A friend of mine works for a medical insurance provider and he told me that rehab facilities have one of the highest profit margins in the medical field and since the success rate is only 6%, they have a steady stream of business. He added that insurance companies are likely to drop coverage for repeat visits because average treatment costs around $20,000.

Geez, and wasn't she claiming just some time ago that her puffiness and weight gain was due to some unnamed "medication" she was taking....

Is she taking methotrexate, the disease modifier? That alone would be a reason not to drink alcohol. Extra fried liver right there...
I have adult RA and it's kinda funny to me now,  the look of shock people get on their face when I answer that it started at age 15.

It dropped, which happens to a lot of women as they get older (though not usually as early or as comprehensively); if she was smoking and drinking (plus acting), it's understandable.  Plus, ISTR she was doing a show where she played Tallulah Bankhead, and I always thought her Friends turn was practicing for that.
I didn't care for the play they made of The Graduate; they tried too hard to do a pop-psych explanation of the Robinson family.  Ugh.  Some things are better left a mystery.

> KATHLEEN Turner is trying to sober up in a Pennsylvania rehab center after
> falling off the wagon following her successful Broadway run in "The Graduate." <snip> Hey - this reminds me of a blind item from earlier this year about a Broadway diva who had taken up drinking again because of jealousy over her younger co-star.  I think the consensus was that it was Kathleen Turner and Alicia Silverstone in The Graduate.
Here's the blind item: Filth2Go - 02/11/02 Could it be that one of our favorite stars of stage, screen, and the occasional brewery has crawled back into her bottle? That's word from some of her friends (and with friends like that.), who tell me that the hard-boiled broad can't handle her liquor any more than she can handle growing old "gracefully". Rumor has it that she's jealous of that much younger co-star, who's always had as highly scrutinized a weight problem as our once curvaceous bunny. But these days, the scrutiny is back on the touring mom, who will be showing a hell of a lot more than her now-svelte daughter. Need one more clue? I don't know many people who have been directed by both father and daughter.

mrsmikelo ...@c4.com (mikes wife)

Michael Moriarty's voice has changed incredibly after all his drinking. It is much much deeper..

pstaw57 ...@aol.com (PStaw57550)

It all fits - after all Alicia was known as "Fat Girl" during the Batman movie.
Whats that comment about direction at the end though - is her father a director???

yepimwi ...@webtv.net (~spacytracy~)

To make a long story short, this place was a dump.  They charged my insurance company $15,000 for 30 days of what amounted to sitting around in AA and NA meetings.  I could have done that for free.  The place was just filthy, often there were dirty used sanitary napkins on the floor in the ladies bathroom.  It smelled so bad in the whole place I spent a LOT of time outdoors.  My counselor told me that she had too many cases to take care of and that she had no time for me, I would have to figure it out on my own.  Yeah, real nice.   If some of the other posters would like to discuss this further, someone start a thread.  I would be more than happy to participate.

Kathleen Turner has been in a movie directed by Sofia Coppola (Virgin Suicides) and Francis Ford Coppola (Peggy Sue Got Married), father and daughter.

Prednisone is what I am on.  20 MG every other day.  It has weird side effects.

Don't most insurance providers cap such treatment at 30 days? (And if you were insured thru your employer, who would want to submit a claim for such treatment, if there was a chance your employer would find out?) No wonder people are so reluctant to get help---the insurance companies make it difficult.
