Recently, my husband's 43-year old brother left his wife of 20+ years after he began an affair with a married, much younger woman that he works with. I am appalled by my brother-in-law's actions, these among them: * BIL and his wife were in the process of adopting two children from the county foster system. The two children had been living with them for over a year when he left. They had been treated by their numerous cousins-to-be (and the rest of the family) as welcome additions to the large c ...

Hi All, What is your opinion of gift registries for baby showers? I have a strong feeling that registries should only be for weddings, and anything else is like rudely asking for presents. Problem is, my mother-in-law wants me to register for my baby shower. Also, if you do register, should that be noted in the baby shower invitation?

Today we received a warning letter for truancy for our 2nd grader. The principal said she was concerned about dd's absences. I am not concerned about dd's absences--she is bright, she knows the material [she's missed five days this month, but received 100 on her test for materials covered.] I don't think the teacher is concerned. But the principal said dd is only allowed 5 excused absences per semester. I'm not happy about the possibility of legal sanctions for keeping dd home (she was sick this ...

That wasn't the best subject header, but I couldn't think of anything better. :-) I know that there are lots of people here who live far away (ie - farther than day-trip distance) from family, and I was just wondering how that affects your normal travel plans. I'm asking because this has just come up for us. We live several states away from both of our families. We see them fairly often - maybe for a long weekend every three or four months, sometimes more, sometimes less. Anyway, DH and I are pl ...

Addiction Treatment Centre | Recovery Centre The therapy is based on the 12 Step Model and aims to help people find a more spiritual and enjoyable way of living free from the bondage of active addiction. The programme is designed to help people overcome issues associated with low self−esteem and to provide them with the tools and assistance to build their confidence to a healthy and productive level. The treatment programme ranges from 12 − 24 weeks.
Predictors of successful completion of a halfway - house program for Researchers have estimated that between 50 and 90% of treated alcoholics will relapse [1]. Retention rates in treatment programs are quite low; Baekeland and Lundwall [2] reviewed the literature and found that mean dropout from inpatient programs ranged from 13.7 to 39%, while in outpatient programs 52 to 75% drop out before the fourth session. Thus, even those managing to complete an inpatient treatment program often drop out of an aftercare program (cf. Strack et al. [3]). Abusers of other drugs show the same recidivism patterns [4].
By focusing the present study on female program completion, we addressed what we perceived as a lack in the treatment literature. Although some studies have attempted to identify factors related to successful program completion by male substance abusers, i.e., abusers either of alcohol or of other drugs, little research has focused on successful female completers. In a recent effort to predict patient dropout using preexisting personality traits, Craig and Olson [5] administered Gough and Heilbrun's Adjective Checklist [6] to a male sample predominantly addicted to heroin and cocaine. ...

cover story You can rent a three-bedroom on Hurley for $500 to $600 a month. Today five properties on the block stand empty with “FOR SALE” signs hanging from their facades. Many have been on the market for months, and some for longer. There are five boarded-up abandoned properties on the block too, one of which is tagged with scrawled black graffiti that reads “SMOKE, SMOKE.”
Ramon and Shawn’s children are little dollops of smiling sweetness. They like to splash in the kiddie pool Ramon has set up on the small square concrete slab that is their backyard. Shawn has a tattoo of a Hershey’s Kiss on her right forearm—a tribute to her daughter. A banner bearing her oldest daughter’s name waves from the piece of candy. She thinks her daughter is like a little piece of chocolate delight.
Family Struggles To Cope Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her youngest daughter checked out groceries at 7:30 Sunday night at a Stop & Shop a mile or so from their Cheshire house. Police investigating the home invasion that left Hawke-Petit and daughters Michaela, 11, and Hayley, 17, dead now believe their killers were watching as they returned to the family's white Mercedes-Benz in the parking lot. The suspects, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes, followed the pair back to their Sorghum Mill Drive home, police sources said. Hours later, at about 3 a.m., they ...
Investigators are still trying to answer a key question: Did the suspects randomly select Hawke-Petit and her daughter or did they have a prior connection to the family? What investigators do know, law enforcement sources said, is that once the suspects saw where the Petits lived, they went to a local Wal-Mart and purchased rope and an air rifle. The suspects, who both have long criminal records and were out on parole, then parked their car slightly more than a mile away before entering the home, sources said. At about 9 a.m., Hayes and Hawke-Petit, 48, drove ...
"Smithsonian of the Adirondacks" turns 50 The museum has grown from nine buildings to 22, including a 19th-century logger's hotel, an artist's cottage, a one-room cabin called the Sunset Cottage, a 1907 one-room school house that now serves as a family activity center, a fire tower and the Marion River Carry Pavilion, which houses a 1901 steam engine and passenger car and a steamboat called the "Osprey." Each building, Welsh noted, is like its own small museum.
Clarissa Dickson Wright: Confessions of One Fat Lady He glared at me, snorted with laughter and stalked off to kick the dog. From that moment on, violence entered my life and I knew it was up to me to guard and protect my mother. I was not afraid, but it was the start of the hatred I felt for my father and which was to burden me for much of my life. My father, Arthur Dickson Wright, was a brilliant general surgeon who once operated on the Queen Mother. My mother Molly was an Australian heiress, a woman of extraordinary charm and elegance. I was born in 1947, the youngest of four children: my brother Anthony was 13 years older than me, my two sisters even older. My father had become ...
I woke early, to find the room full of light. The door opened and in came a sister carrying jugs of steaming water. Another girl smiled at me and I smiled back. I suddenly realised I was in a safe place. From that moment I loved boarding school. If you broke the rules you were punished, but you knew what those rules were. In an alcoholic home the goalposts move, so what you are laughed at for one day you are thumped for the next. Going home in the holidays revived all my fears, and Christmas was the worst. My father hated it and every year he read me the opening chapters ...

Impressionist wing Impressionist wing When I travel alone, even somewhere as close as nearby as Chicago, I am on the lookout for signs and signals that tell me what to expect. I have written before about how an iTunes shuffle can make or break a trip, fill me with anticipation or dread. I think this all stems back to a family trip when I was probably about 9 years old. We were living in London and we were driving up to Scotland for a vacation. We had everything packed. We had snacks for the car. We had games to play along the way. As we locked the door of the house, I was filled ...
Waiting Well it's about halfway through the business day and we haven't heard anything yet. Although I can't be sure they haven't called the boyfriend yet. We're not exactly on good terms at this moment, so he probably wouldn't rush to call me from work. I will probably have to wait until 4:00 to hear from him. Which is too bad because I wanted to use this day off to start cleaning out my room and packing some stuff up (i finally got boxes). But I don't want to start packing for nothing. This weekend was disaster (boyfriend ...
HI I haven't been around these parts (for a real entry at least) in a while, huh? As usual, life has taken precedence. It happens on occasion. I had three lia sophia shows this week (and yes, lia sophia is not capitalized on purpose...it's the way the company does it and it is most aggravating). They were on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Two were okay, one was fabulous, and I manged to get one booking anyway. The older two kids had Vacation Bible School all week which they LOVED . Our hairdresser's church sponsors VBS every year and the kids have loved ...
