Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool HealthySEAT ChildrensHealthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEAT) | Children's More than 53 million children and about 6 million adults spend a significant portion of their days in more than 120,000 public and private school buildings. Many of these buildings are old and in poor condition, and may contain environmental conditions that inhibit learning and pose increased risks to the health of children and staff. The Schools web site is designed to provide one-stop access to the many programs and resources available to help prevent and resolve environmental issues in schools.

1. Instruction Instruction is the basic way students receive information about health and wellness, health risks and health issues. CSH instruction includes active health promotion through comprehensive curriculum, varied materials, lifestyle-focused physical education, and varied learning strategies. Effective instruction allows students to develop knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviours for healthy decision-making. It fosters life skills, such as health literacy, problem solving, and communication skills, and promotes a sense of personal competency and self-efficacy.

District updating policies on cell phones PDAs disciplineDistrict updating policies on cell phones, PDAs, discipline Things like cell phones, electronic paging devices and personal digital assistants (PDAs) weren't a concern back in 1994, when the Carmi-White County school board last updated its policies on student discipline, suspension and expulsion. But things have changed. And those policies are changing, as well. The Unit Five board gave its preliminary approval Monday night to some substantial changes in those policies. The board is expected to formally approve the modifications at its September meeting.

Dr. Keith Talley, unit superintendent, told the board (gathering in the administration building in Carmi for its monthly meeting) that "We looked at our policies and felt it was time to upgrade them." Technology has changed substantially in the last 13 years, he said, and the policies and procedures needed to be updated in response. The new documents are drawn from Illinois Association of School Board policies and are more comprehensive than those in effect now, Talley told the board.
