(21 Messages)

A good sign for labour that they have come to their senses on school funding policy and dropped Lathams policy of envy and hate re private schools. I think it hurt them dearly in the last election. Ive got a good feeling about Beazley this time around. He wants it badly and for all the right reasons. terry

comparing private and public school costs

(25 Messages)

provides additional support for what I have frequently posted - that private school tuitions are rising MUCH faster than per-student expenditures in the public schools. This article deals only with private schools in the DC area, but it notes nearly 100% tuition increases in the last 10 years. We don't yet have the most recent numbers for the public schools, but from 1991 to 1999, the public school expenditure per student went up only around 33% ($5258 to $7013). The print version of the Post in ...

Discipline in private and public schools

(7 Messages)

New York Times, 5/8/2001 Not Apples and Oranges but Mandarins -- by John Tierney Whenever I compare the New York public school system with its largest rival, the Roman Catholic system, readers pelt me with apples and oranges. The two systems shouldn't be compared, they say, because the Catholic schools have unfair advantages. One favorite complaint is that the Catholic schools dump problem students back into the public system. That complaint sounds plausible enough, since the Catholic schools ar ...

South Carolina public funds supporting religious private schoolsSouth Carolina public funds supporting religious private schools. The Progressive Conservative party tried this in Ontario a few years ago. Any family with a child in a private religious school would receive a yearly grant (or was it a tax credit?) They wanted to reduce public school attendance. Of course, in Ontario the taxpayers have always funded the entire Catholic school system! Since it's government-funded, anyone is allowed to attend. AFAIK they do teach creationism, but in religion class, not science class.

Alabama use to do this but dropped it ten or fifteen years ago due to budget cuts. The justification was that these were students who were going to go to college in state anyway so it was ok to give them part of their religious college tuition since they weren't using up state university resources. The fact that they cut the funds to save money seems to show the original argument was bunk.

Private schools seek academy cashPrivate schools seek academy cash The Independent Schools Council said it was expecting up to 20 fee-paying private schools to make the switch to take advantage of government funding. Academies are privately run state schools, brought in by the government to raise standards in areas of educational disadvantage in England. Ministers want to see at least 400, in the teeth of trade union opposition. The head of research at the Independent Schools Council, Sam Freedman, said private schools might seek to become state-funded academies if they were struggling financially. "Schools would only do it if they thought they weren't going ...
