Doctors trying to convince parents ADHD is real Joelle Babula The Arizona Republic Apr. 7, 2004 12:00 AM Related links ??? A subjective diagnosis Like thousands of Valley parents who have children diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Mac and Dana McAlear at first were horrified by the notion that their 11-year-old son needed drugs. They didn't believe their boy had ADHD, nor were they certain the disorder even existed. The McAlears' initial sentiment is increasingly common. P ...

ADD ADHD Private Schools Specializing in ADD or ADHD According to the National Institute of Mental Health, as many as 5% of children may have ADHD. Children and adolescents with attention deficit disorder, ADD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, typically exhibit behaviors such as a poor or short attention span, impulsive behaviors, hyperactivity or disruptive behavior, and difficulty focusing on a task through completion. Parents often feel frustrated, believing the child is just "lazy" or "stubborn" rather than suffering from a behavioral issue.
If your child continues to perform below his or her abilities in school, if the teacher complains that your child cannot or will not pay attention and is disruptive in class, and if your child has a tendency to do things "without thinking", he or she may have ADHD. Children with ADD or ADHD also often have a low frustration level and can become irritable or belligerent when pressed to complete a task.

School expands on mission to aid children with autism When a particular student acts up, Amy Giles sometimes places the girl in a tiny, windowless room and closes the door. Then Giles stands outside the closet-like chamber, waiting patiently until the child settles down. If it were another child, it might seem cruel. But Giles, a Westborough resident, is probably that student's best chance for a quality education. Giles teaches at the New England Center for Children on Route 9 in Southborough, a school that is at the forefront of educating children with autism, a neurological disorder that dramatically inhibits ...
For autistic kids, life isn't that simple, Cunniff Serio said. They don't glean lessons from their environment. They don't necessarily notice how their big brother sits quietly at meals. They often can't focus on the conversations going on around them. Most autistic children start showing signs of lacking the tools to develop normally by 18 months, she said. Forty percent of autistic children do not speak, for example. Many shirk from meeting other people's eyes. But some may appear ...
Fighting For The Right To Learn Fighting For The Right To Learn By Bill Quigley 07 August, 2007 Countercurrents.org “Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for 5,000 years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental…The freedom to learn…has been bought by bitter sacrifice. And whatever we may think of the curtailment of other civil rights, we should fight to the last ditch to keep open the right to learn.” W.E. B. DuBois, “The Freedom to Learn.” (1949). "Education is the property of no one. It belongs to the people as a whole. And if education is not given to the people, they will have ...
