character traits

(12 Messages)

I am wondering if there are specific techniques involved when giving characters BELIEVABLE character traits. I don't want to have my main character flipping a coin throughout the film, nor do I want him to always add "Know what I'm sayin?" to everything he says, simply to give him traits. And yet, I know that a good film sinks or swims on the quality of the characters. I often think of Indiana Jones, who hates snakes. That one is easy to believe, and, I think, makes Indy more real. And ...

Character Consistency Question

(25 Messages)

One thing I have problems with is keeping my characters consistent. When I wrote fan fic, it was easy to keep them all individual and consistent--I could hear the actors doing the lines in my head. And I only wrote fan fic for shows where I could hear the characters. Guest characters just had to sound and act differently. In writing my own stories in my own universes, I sometimes find my characters either starting to sound alike or having a similar feel. I try to give them different personalitie ...

Applying Human character traits to aliens in scifi shows (long)

(25 Messages)

Thinkum made a good point. Cultures (both alien and human) have different ways of psychological development. in fact, one of the biggest (and justifiable) arguments about freuds anaysis of human development was that all of his research was based on rich europeans. That is why cultural anthropology was such a crucial endeavor into a better understanding of human relations, development, and growth. (for the record, im not a freudian per se, i follow more the theories of Erik Erikson, who expounded ...

In Nomine character traits to GURPS 4e

(18 Messages)

Howdy all, GURPS In Nomine has a bunch of traits suitable for the Celestials in that world, that I'm having trouble converting to GURPS 4e. The "Awareness (Symphony)" is priced at 15 points; GURPS Update 4e tells me that level of Awareness should be "Detect (Symphony)" for 30 points now. No problem; if that's what it costs in 4e, that's what it costs. However, "Disturbs Symphony" is a -15 point disadvantage, clearly meant to balance the Awareness with having one's a ...

Valuable Lessons on Teaching in Private Schools California JobValuable Lessons on Teaching in Private Schools (California Job Student Body – Students at a private school are generally easier to work with because class sizes are usually smaller (as few as 15 pupils in private schools versus 30 to 40 in public schools). With such large class sizes, "teaching rapidly degenerates into babysitting. So based on class size, private schools will be better places to teach," notes education expert Robert Kennedy, the private school ‘guide’ at About.com. Public schools are typically obligated to take anyone who lives within their boundaries. Private ...

Compensation – Private-school salaries are generally less than public districts where teachers also enjoy more generous retirement benefits. However, that gap may be closing as public-school districts grapple with over-budget pension and benefit packages. In many cases, public schools are requiring teachers to cover part of the cost of benefits. While private-school compensation remains somewhat lower, Kennedy points out that "much depends on the school and its financial resources. One private-school benefit found especially in boarding schools is housing and means." ...

EFFECTIVE EDUCATIONEFFECTIVE EDUCATION Education is one of the unifying elements of society. It is not unifying because of a strict repetitive mantra, as is common in communist regimes, but instead because it creates a populace that is able to discuss, reason and compromise rather than resort to settlement of disputes by the sword. The foundation must be one of personal self government, but without knowledge to eliminate fears and fallacies, there is no basis for discussion between peoples. How do we achieve this desired result? Universal education was not the case with our founding fathers. They were largely self-taught in home schools or through tutors ...

Tom Slee A Modest ManifestoTom Slee: A Modest Manifesto Arkhipov's moment came during the Cuban Missile Crisis on October 27, 1962, when he was an officer on a Soviet nuclear-armed submarine. When the submarine was bombarded by an American ship an intelligence officer on board thought "that's it - the end" and the captain gave the order to prepare to fire a nuclear missile. Had the missile launched, nuclear war would have begun, but firing a nuclear warhead required the approval of three officers and Arkhipov prevailed on his fellow officers to wait -- and things calmed down. When the story became public in 2002 Thomas Blanton, ...

In 1983, Stanislav Petrov was monitoring the Soviet early warning satellites for signs of a US attack. His instructions were clear: if he detected missiles targeting the USSR he was "to push the button and launch a counter-offensive". But when the system showed five missile launches in the US all headed towards the USSR, sirens blared and warning lights flashed, and a room full of people waited for him to push the button, he didn't. It didn't look right to him and he reported the alarm to his superiors but declared it false. Petrov was right: the signal was a false alarm triggered by the satellite itself, and a war was averted.
