Hello Friends, To the immense credit of the research branch of the ADA, I awakened this morning to find email from them that pointed the way to this abstract of a new study showing an association between a history of poor glycemeic control and degraded cognitive function in older adults... It is worth a look for all of us, especially many of us T2s who are 50s, 60s, and beyond... Remember that old expression "gone 'round the bend?" Will, T2

Just came across this exercise suggested for older adults, to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy, so I thought I'd pass it on to some of my friends. The article suggested doing it three days a week. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day, you' ...

Adults Suffer Image Problems Much Like Teens | LiveScience The lure of popularity has led many a teen to jump through social hoops, ranging from harmless to unhealthy to life-threatening. Turns out, adults are just as vulnerable, and their need to fit in can have serious health consequences. New research suggests that men and women alike experience anxiety over so-called appearance-based rejection. And the recurring and sometimes constant worries can fuel serious mental and physical health problems, including eating disorders . The root cause could be an inherent desire to connect with others, the study's lead psychologist said. ...
Older Adults Keeping Teeth Longer Older Adults Keeping Teeth Longer, But Dental Diseases Still a Common Problem Tooth loss was once thought to be an inevitable consequence of aging, but with proper care and attention, adults are keeping their teeth and their oral health intact. "Teeth were meant to last a lifetime," said Dr. Jed Jacobson, vice president of Professional Services and dental director at Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. "Older adults face some additional challenges to oral health, but many of these can be overcome with a bit of extra ...
Teens and older adults: partners in teaching children Children America's teenagers and older adults are two seemingly diverse populations, yet they have many things in common. They share a need to make positive contributions to their society, they need to be wanted and appreciated for their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm, and both groups are active contributors to the volunteer community. Now Camp Fire, the national youth organization, is involving both of these groups in an innovative project that may have implications for other service providers.
Usually when teenagers and older adults are brought together as volunteers, the teens serve the older adults, or the older adults help the young people. Camp Fire's "Intergenerational Program Delivery System Project" has been recruiting and training teenagers and older adults to work together as teams to conduct educational programs for younger children in kindergarten through the third grade. This demonstration project exemplifies the next generation of intergenerational programs--programs in which youths and older adults are partners in service to a younger generation. The 16-month demonstration ...

Weight-loss camp brings hope of a new life for Katy teen Editor's note: This is the first of a three-part series. Doctors call childhood obesity an epidemic. But beneath the statistics and scientific studies are girls like Isabel Hernandez, a 14-year-old from Katy who likes to paint her nails and collect snow globes, who has a MySpace page but still sleeps with a nightlight. The summer before her freshman year, Isabel spent eight weeks at weight-loss camp. This is her story.
Where are the men? Overwhelmingly, single mothers we interviewed were black. Statistics show black children are more likely to live in single-parent families in Canada. The 2001 census says almost half of black children 14 and under live with only one parent, compared with about one-fifth of other children. As well, the census shows that 44 per cent of black children live in low-income households, compared to 19 per cent of other children.
The theme of single mothers runs like a backbeat through reports about murder victims who grew up fatherless or were "baby fathers" themselves. A man shot dead behind a public housing complex two years ago left seven children with several women. Another found guilty of murder was the second child of a single mother of seven who had her first baby at 17.
Plans to introduce teen booze ban rejected Cheshire Chief Constable Peter Fahy said he would like to see the legal drinking age raised by three years, as well as a smoking-style ban on drinking alcohol in public places. Conservative home affairs spokesman James Brokenshire said the solution was to give local communities more power over the operation of licensing and more visible community policing. He said: "Just having a 21-year-limit will not deal with the 11 and 12-year-olds who are binge drinking on a monthly basis and the 15 and 16-year-olds who are getting alcohol very freely." He claimed alcohol was too cheap and too strong ...

Understanding Drug Abuse and Addiction Many people view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem. Parents, teens, older adults, and other members of the community tend to characterize people who take drugs as morally weak or as having criminal tendencies. They believe that drug abusers and addicts should be able to stop taking drugs if they are willing to change their behavior. These myths have not only stereotyped those with drug-related problems, but also their families, their communities, and the health care professionals who work ...
