I just finished reading a book about emotional intelligence. This book promotes the concept of handling emotions responsibly. Such responsible uses of emotions include empathy, impulse control, delaying gratification and awarness of one's emotional states. Though I'm sure the aurthor thought he was doing the public a good service by writing this book, I say that book was one of the WORST books I ever read! And I'm probably saying that because I have such LOW emotional intelligence. Among other things, this so-called "self-help" book made me feel like more of a genetically defective and brain-damaged loser than before. It was filled to the brim with numerous cases that show that those with high emotional intelligence tend to do better those with low emotional intelligence. The book seemed to emphasize conformity and seemingly justified the mistreatment that many low E.Q.
people experience from groups. Even of the message of the book is correct, it has not inspired me to improve my emotional intelligence.
That book was the suckiest piece of suck that ever sucked!. But then again, what do I know? I have low emotional intelligence after all.

I'm no expert, but I helped my ex study (for about 4 years) for her Doctorate in Psychology, so I'm pretty familiar with some 'Psych' subjects.
The topic of Emotional Intelligence (for the case of this discussion should be referred to as EI, to stave-off my carpel-tunnel) is a pretty popular theory in the Mental Health industry. It's taught right along with Freud and all of the other 'foundations' of Modern Psychology.
Basically, the idea is that intelligence can show itself in many ways
-- some people are "book smart" some people are "creative" and some people have "EI". These are the people who can "read" the emotions others, and can control their own emotional reactions in ways that better position themselves in social (and political) situations.
I remember seeing cartoon-like images of children with happy faces, sad faces, worried faces, etc. as a part of a battery of tests for children who needed to have their EI levels gauged for purposes of treatment and diagnosis. They were asked to first describe what the faces were showing, then they were to make up a story about the picture, thus giving emotional insight not only on how the tested child interprets various emotion, but also how well they could verbalize/process their interpretations (a key component of EI).
You wanna' get REALLY pissed? Read "The Bell Curve". Basically, most of us are idiots who just don't know any better.
Though, I see no way how this has anything to do with zines...

One problem I've noticed with you is you never seem to follow up and reply to the replies on threads you start.
Are you real, or a spambot?

Will, Yul is like the Johny Appleseed of alt.zines... he drops conversation starters, but doesn't help them grow.
Actually, his mind blew up months ago and he swore never to read/reply to posts again... but that didn't stop him from posting himself...

I'm skeptical of all these categories quack psychologists come up with to categorize all of us. (Like "A.D.D."-- get out the Ritalin!)   What I know about Yul is that's he's a cooperative, capable, effective member of the ULA team.

The only real problem I've ever had with Yul is that he posts in the newsgroups, then never seems to bother to return and respond to the responses.
In this way we comes across like a spambot.

Yul -
Your incessant drive to yield yourself for such easy target practice belies your low "EI" (i.e. you don't know how to protect yourself from further emotional torment). Your extreme defensiveness and victimhood over the topic doesn't help either.
Cheers -

Karl and gang, I think that psychology, as a medical practice, has the difficult task of dissecting "human nature" working WITHIN the confines of 'said' human nature. Since there's no real way to test/diagnose patients in a vacuum, categories and method theories help the psychologists separate themselves from the patient.
I think that the popularity of medication (your Ritalin reference) is a two-source problem: American's obsession with the "quick fix" approach to health, and Psychology's (as a field) need/want to be more removed from the emotional component of treatment. If you say someone is mentally ill because of a chemical imbalance, it's more widely accepted
-- if you say someone is unstable "just because they are", it's not quantifiable, and thus discredited (though it may be totally true, and in reality 'incurable').
Or did you just want to talk about Yul?
He's actually much more BORING than the subject he started, in my opinion.

Low Fiduciary Intelligence is something I know a lot about. (Currently living on bread, peanut butter, and tuna fish.)   Hey Brent-- you got in before Bush and Company took away the bankruptcy laws! You must have higher F.I. than you let on. (I'll be in debtor's prison when my string runs out.) America-- what a great country! Ya gotta love it.
