Judge orders couple not to have children

(7 Messages)

ROCHESTER, New York (AP) -- A couple has been ordered not to conceive any more children until the ones they already have are no longer in foster care. A civil liberties advocate said the court ruling unsealed Friday was "blatantly unconstitutional." Monroe County Family Court Judge Marilyn O'Connor ruled March 31 that both parents "should not have yet another child which must be cared for at public expense." "The facts of this case and the reality of parenthood cry out f ...

residential treatment

In the middle 70's I was placed in a residential treatment center for 2 years, 2 months. I was 14 when admitted. I was said to be emotionally disturbed. When in there, I never saw anyone beaten or tied down, but there was a "quiet room", later 2 quiet rooms. But for me the most dreaded part was being fed on a tray, with no seconds. I got to see kids placed in lockup when they weren't "working on their problems". I also saw kids placed on closet restriction, where they had to ...

Question-Congregate Care

(15 Messages)

There is a website run by a man named Roger Kiser who tells about abuse he suffered in foster care back in the 1950's in the deep south, first with distant relatives acting as foster parents, then in an orphanage. In my part of the country orphanages are as extinct as dinosaurs, either closed or converted to residential treatment centers. He says a lot of them still exist and that they don't allow children to write or receive letters; that they are allowed no use of the U.S. Postal Service. He a ...

Residential Treatment Programs for PTSDResidential Treatment Programs for PTSD Residential Treatment Programs for PTSD I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on residential treatment programs for PTSD. Not a psychiatric hospital per se, but rather something along the lines of a drug rehab program, except for trauma. Evie's former psychiatrist, who specializes in trauma, recommended a couple of private facilities to us. The one we are especially considering primarily makes use of behaviour and cognitive therapies, and specializes in treating patients who have serious physical illnesses as well as PTSD (which Evie most definitely does). The treatment program is for a duration of 3 months and there is some ...

Hello Kathy, I think if is Evie's former psychiatrist recommending it then its worth a look. I think its a good idea as long as its not going to go over stuff already learnt I guess. I cant quite put into words but its got to be totally consuming not just tickle at the problems. If it is then I think it would be great. It'll be extremely hard work. I'm sort of undecided in a way because I think this would have been fantastic for me at the start but not now. I'm not 100% sure that things can be sped up. Thats my view though, the only person that would really know is Evie.

The Basic Foster Care FactsThe Basic Foster Care Facts! My life has been one of long term abuse, homelessness, unemployment and mental illness. At 48 I feel successful because I have finally stopped having the panic attacks, auditory and visual hallucinations and the severe reoccurring suicidal depression that has plagued me most of my life. I am finally holding down a “normal” job and feeling like a “normal” person. I am still poverty strickened, but feel comforitable in my own skin at last.
