An 8th grade math teacher from Pattengill middle school in Lansing, Mich. has been placed on administrative leave for not teaching students the right math courses in order to prepare them for high school math. The problem was not discovered until a week after the school year ended. Parents and students are very angry about the situation (no surprise there). The school district will be having a meeting with students and parents affected by the situation. It won't be pretty. This will cause all ki ...

In grade school I always found summer school to be a fun thing to do in the summer. However, it was my choice to participate in it. I'm just curious about whether or not summer school teachers still encounter students that are there by their own choice, rather than being forced or strongly encouraged. The only kids I ever hear about are those whose parents make them attend.

I haven't been able to participate much in RAM recently, and I am very sad and frustrated about it. I finished Indelible on Monday (LOVED it, although it didn't answer the Lena question from the previous book) but haven't even had a chance to post about it. Grrrr. That's because teachers in my district reported back to work on Tuesday, and it's been a terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad couple of days. Useless, mind-numbing lectures, driving all over the city for various idiotic"seminars&quo ...

I want to apologize to you for calling you names. There is no reason for that. You will either learn, in time, to be an adult or you will not. It's really none of my business. It upsets me to read such cynical, negative stuff from a kid, but I am not your mother. Most women who are married "do stuff" besides sit around the house. Most households require two paychecks to pay the bills, so you see, your "theories" are not all that accurate. And some of us CHOOSE never to have c ...

International Brass Band Summer School An audience of over 300 people packed into the Fulton House Hall like newly caught sardines off the Gower coast to enjoy an eclectic mix of music from 120 musicians from all over the world. The recent Iles Medal recipients, Dr Robert and Dr Nicholas Childs, led the concert that rounded off a splendid week on the campus for the players, aged from 10 to 77 and of varying capabilities.
This year the IBBSS has doubled in size thanks to the reputation of the main artistic directors, but also the quality of the team of tutors, three of whom were featured on the night as soloists. An impressive list of partner sponsors led by Leeds Metropolitan University and York Instruments allowed for a broader scope of musical activities too - allowing the players (and their families in many cases) ample time to enjoy the home town of the poet Dylan Thomas as well as the modern facilities on the campus.
Students go to summer school for many reasons Though the thought of school is far from the minds of most students during the lazy summer days, 12-year-old Claudia Mimoso spent a month of her break in Ossining High School's auditorium preparing for a "Jungle Book" production. "I would have been home, just playing my violin and singing," Mimoso said. But instead she spent time with her peers learning about theater at the Cultural Arts Academy. The four-week program is one of several advancement opportunities offered in the Ossining school district. Summer school is often an alternative for students ...

THE MIRROR: School's Out for Summer, School's Out Forever Message: I thought you might be interested in this article, dated Friday, August 10, 2007, that I read on TheDartmouth.com: "School’s Out for Summer, School’s Out Forever" http://thedartmouth.com/2007/08/10/mirror/thefuture/ Amidst the greasy watermelons, chariot races and pie-throwing contest that herald the approaching Fieldstock weekend looms the scary realization that we've almost reached the end of the sophomore summer Slip 'n Slide (or the bottom of the sophomore summer Double Drop Falls, depending on which water toy metaphor you prefer). Amidst the greasy watermelons, chariot races and pie-throwing contest that herald the approaching Fieldstock weekend looms the scary realization that we’ve almost reached the end of the sophomore summer Slip ‘n Slide (or the bottom of the sophomore summer Double Drop Falls, depending on which water toy metaphor you prefer). Trips down to the river are replaced by late-night study sessions; as finals approach, a stint at the library is no longer a Wednesday-evening taboo. As the summer evening sounds of Lone Pine Tavern drift upstairs, marking fall’s return ...
