In grade school I always found summer school to be a fun thing to do in the summer. However, it was my choice to participate in it. I'm just curious about whether or not summer school teachers still encounter students that are there by their own choice, rather than being forced or strongly encouraged. The only kids I ever hear about are those whose parents make them attend.

I'm not a teacher but I'm guessing no in my school district because the courses offered in summer school now are all remedial and the parent has to pay for each course.  When I was a kid, there were accelerated and other fun courses offered in summer school and they were free.  Not so, now.

Today, my kids can take fun cl***es during the summer.
My son was nervous about the transition from the familiar Kindergarten building to the main 1-6 building, so we let him take photography/scrapbooking.  He made a scrapbook of his summer vacation photos and felt at home in the building when first grade started.

That isn't true.  Most, if not all (excepting inner city schools, but even some of them still provide this) offer enrichment programs.  I've seen catalogs for DC, NYC, LAUSD, Fairfax County, Clark County, Baltimore, Montgomery, Anne Arundel counties...

There was no summer school in my district when I was a kid.

This year, summer school is only open to those who fall under a certain percentage on a state test.   Since this is "summer school", it is an option... not a requirement to p*** on to the next grade.   If this was a fancy "private school", then "summer school" would be viewed and treated diffently, IMO.

WOW!  Parents have to take "responsibility"???  That scenario would never happen in my district.

On 31 Mar 2004 07:02:48 -0800, Lee You are VERY LUCKY to live in your district (if it's a district).  My district will only offer remedial cl***es this year and has never dreamed about offering a cl*** like you described to Kindergarteners moving into first grade.
Please tell us if your school is public or private and where it's located.
Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

Unless you are intimately familiar with every school district in the US, please be careful about who you call a liar in this forum.

The first time I read it, I thought you were making a guess about the general case, and using your own school district as an example to support that guess.

Thank you for the explanation.

I breaking a usenet rule and replying to my own post to apologize to Magi for the tone I used, above.  I should know better than to post early in the morning.

You say below, "When I was a kid, there were accelerated and other fun courses offered in summer school and they were free.  Not so, now." That implies, pretty strongly, that this is the case everywhere and that they don't offer these cl***es.  You don't say "When I was a kid, the school district I lived in..." Magi

In that case, I always owe you an apology.  My friend just IM'd me to tell me I was being witchy.  She's right.  I need to go eat dinner, since I didn't get to eat lunch today.  I HATE when my teaching partner is out.  I had time this morning to finish a grad school ***ignment (book I needed to read), and grades... but once the kids got there...
hoo boy!

Thanks for all of the responses. My summer school also offered both remedial courses and fun ones. However, I never took the remedial cl***es so I'm sure my opinions on summer school would have been different if I hadn't taken photography and art courses. Our private school didn't offer cl***es, we had to take them through the public school if we wanted to attend. But I think it helped me because I had the chance to meet other kids that went to the public schools, it was a good transition.
