And in a *4* bedroom house??? Lol.
I'm amazed they only go through *almost* a gallon of milk a day. I go through that much now.
Also there is no way we could come up with 18 names we both like. Lol.
Wow, thanks Candace.

How'd they ever find the time/privacy (nevermind the desire!) to make the last dozen kids?
I imagine that after a dozen or so kids, parents stop fighting over who *gets* to name the baby --
Ma: I named the last one, it's your turn.
Pa: No, no, I distinctly remember naming the last two.
Ma: Hey, I have to give birth to the kid, you can at least come up with a name!
Pa: Okay, get the baby name book and the darts out again.

Or try to sell the rights to your baby's name on eBay. Really (from the "Totally Bizarre" category, of course): http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1624089269 Item # 1624089269 "This auction is for the right to name our boy to whatever you so choose. As the winning bidder, your organization could receive millions in free publicity, and your PR firm might even want to further capitalize on all the free advertising. Money WILL be accepted by tobacco firms. All proceeds will go into a fund soley for use for child expenses and college tuition." I saw the father of this baby on a news program last week, and he said they would NOT take money from tobacco companies (or gun manufacturers). Guess they weren't getting the bids they wanted and changed their minds. Money talks! Poor kids (as-yet-unnamed baby boy has two older siblings). I hope the kid does get college tuition so he can eventually teach dad how to spell "solely" correctly.

I wasn't impressed with that figure either! I have heard of plenty of families with only a couple of teenagers who went through that much a day.
I guess you just stop caring :-) I am still fuzzy on how they have afforded to raise that many kids--it seems kind of like an obsession for them.

We have a three bedroom with a large basement that we are going to turn into our room. And I think that's too cramped.
That's a YMMV. Some kids just won't drink milk or there may be allergies or intolerances.
We are having problems with a girls name just in case the sonogram was wrong.
It was in my paper on Saturday and it took a few days to find a copy online.
I had to share.

I wonder what was the urge to keep reproducing- it sounds to me from reading, etc. that they are trying to fill a void in their own marriage.
Who knows- maybe they like all the chaos.

This makes me really suspicious. I see no reason to have more than 3 kids, and I'm certainly not in any position to tell people when or how to reproduce, but that's absolutely crazy.

It's hard to believe that wasn't covered in the article. The author had to have known that would be something the readers would wonder about. If I were interviewing those folks, my first question would've been "Why?!" (Followed by the $$ question). Apparently the author is more sensitive than I am. Perhaps there's a religious motivation to have lots of kids and/or a moral/religious objection to birth control.

Suspicious of what? You know, some people just really love kids. Some people enjoy big families. Some people who are deeply in love think they should be celebrating and sharing that love by having kids. And some people believe raising a big family brings glory to God.
Three is just an arbitrary number. I don't want 18 kids, but I'd be happy to have more than the four I have currently.

I doubt I'd want 18 kids, but who knows? LOL. I love large families. I have 3 of my own, one on the way, and a stepdaughter. That's 5 altogether. If finances/energy allowed for more (we're stretching it as it is) I'd love to have as many as I physically could.
As for the milk thing, only our children drink milk so we go through a gallon (or 4 litres here in Canada) in about 5 days. My husband and I drink fortified soy milk.
Milk is not the necessity people are brainwashed to believe it is ;) Adagio

This is just the feeling I get from my friend who is having #6 (which *to me* would be too many children *for me*). She's from England, left to nanny in the States as a teenager, did that for 10 yrs, met and married her Marine husband. Her parents (still in England) divorced and had *new* kids and essentially dumped the *old* kids. It comes across *to me* that she has this many children to create a new family since she has no old or original family anymore. Her husband and kids are all she has.
As for the chaos, you'd think my friend could handle it. She freaks out, cries, gets depressed. I personally think she has too many children for *her* to handle. (She just told me recently how she gets PPD every time *and* it gets worse each time. Sheesh.)

Hey you, we are not brainwashed!! We just happen to be a family of milk lovers. Lol. Seriously, if I let them, the kids would drink it allll day.
The pediatrician even told me to keep them at 30 oz a day each. No can do.

OOps, I didn't intend to offend anyone... if you like milk, or feel you need it, or both, drink to your hearts content! :) Nothing wrong with it if your body can handle it.
I just merely wanted to point out that there is also nothing wrong with NOT drinking it, either :). Or even not drinking as much as the Joneses, or the FDA, or whoever, think we "should".
I just saw a few tut-tuts happening at the amount this large family was "only" drinking, that is all :) Cheers Adagio

Adagio, I *knew* you were kidding. I should have put more smiley faces. Sorry. :) I wasn't "tsking" them or anything. I was just surprised cos of how much milk *we* drink, with only 2 small kids, that they go through the same amount or even *less*. I guess I just know a lot of milk drinkers/lovers too.
Suddenly I'm really in the mood for a gl*** of milk. Lol.

Reading the URL, I was pretty impressed with the story, actually.
with 18 children and no multiples, some of the children had grown by the time others were born. Their second child died shortly after birth leaving them with 17. With the small portion of their lives presented in that article, I really am glad I am having a large-ish family. They sound like very head-on-their-shoulders parents, and the kids, judging from the article alone, seem happy and normal.
I'm sure every family, large or small, has their down side, too, but this family seems pretty much ok.

Well you see, when a man and woman really love each other.... just kidding.
I just can't imagine. I'm only on #2 (and final) and this pregnancy is killing me. EIGHTEEEN! I noticed the youngest one has Down Syndrome, poor thing. If they got married straight out of high school she would be about 18, which means she got pregnant with the last one at about 45.

Okay, I thought you were kidding.
How awful.
And I bet the parents are kicking themselves, given the fact the bid right now, with just over 5 hours to go, is $2175.00.
