Hi, could anyone tell me if they have had group therapy, did it help you?
I'm supposed to start this soon. I'm very apprehensive about this. What should I expect.

Hi!
I had "intensive group therapy", roughly twice(?) a week, for a year.
That was about 8 years ago. It helped me enormously - I was in the worst bout of depression I've ever been in; and I learnt not only that I wasn't the only person to feel like that, but that I could be liked by other people!
Although my faithful black dog (depression) still comes to heel once in a while, it's never been as bad. I put that down to the therapy.

I've had group therapy, it didn't help me a great deal though. What you get out of it will depend on you, you can't talk about deep sensitive problems with all of those people about. But you can get practical advice about lesser problems which might be affecting you.

I do remember tears and sensitive moments.Perhaps i was thinking too deep and expecting too much.I wouldn't say to someone don't go to the group.I went every week for a year.My general policy on all types of therapy is go and stick it out because it can't do any harm even if it doesn't help.

hi, yes, weekly sessions of 1hr, group of up to 6 (all male) yes, gave me some techniques for getting back to work, also helped to be able to talk face to face with fellow suffers.
think more along the lines of i'm *going* to start this soon, forget 'supposed', be positive [end of lecture] expect to be very nervous (oh, u r already). the first session will probably be an 'introduce yorself'. the group i was with was run by a psy nurse and he gently nudged us in the right direction.
wot to expect from the sessions? dunno, wot sort of sessions r u going for?
mine was 'goal setting and achieving realistic results' or some such high falutin' crap. like i said it gave me some good techniques for geting back to work.
hope yor sessions go well for u, let us know wot they r about (or will that be yor first suprise?)

[snip] I don't see any particular reason why you shouldn't be referred for group therapy - you've had it, you found it helpful, so... Well, in your position I'd kick up a stink until I got what I wanted. If there's nothing in your specific patch, 'they' can refer you for group therapy anywhere in the UK (okay, so you'll want somewhere close by that you can get to, but you get the idea).

It all depends on the details of how the group is run, and the only way to find out is to get someone who knows about the particular group you've been referred to to tell you.
It can be hard to get useful information about group therapy in advance.
I was referred to it by a shrink (Dr Roger N Chitty based at the Countess of Chester hospital). I asked for more information. He said: There are various theories about how group therapy works, some of which may or may not be helpful.
which wasn't exactly much use to me.

[snip] Hmm... I've got quite a lot of literature on lots of forms of therapy that do cause great harm. Psychotherapy can be every bit as harmful as inappropriate drug therapy - I've a reference to someone ending up dead as a direct result of inappropriately applied psychotherapy.
I for one have suffered harm in psychotherapeutic settings.
The bottom line is that *all* potentially useful treatments are *potentially* harmful - so it's important for people undergoing treatment to be able to ***ess the treatment themselves. The professional experts cannot be trusted to do this.
