LSD for alcohol recovery??????

A friend of mine was telling me about a test program out in San Francisco where alcoholics in recovery are given very minute doses of LSD.Then the doctor talks with them, and the pt. and doctor get new insight into the pt's problems..My friend said he might have seen it on 20/20...This whole idea sounds very dubious to me but I want to give my friend the benefit of the doubt..Has anyone heard of LSD being given in any such recovery program?

Actually, twice. The first time was when I was in college. I decided to try LSD, but being the analytical type-a boozehound that I am, I did all kinds of reading on the subject first. I remember seeing a reference to LSD use in various types of treatment, including alcoholism, in the late 50s and early 60s.
Bill W. also tried LSD to try to recreate his original spiritual awakening, which was apparently very intense. I've seen it on the web, but I can't remember where. I also think it's in the araa faq somewhere.
So, in short, I know there's info on it, I just don't remember where the heck to find it. Doh!

acid is a nasty drug, a true wolf in sheep's clothing. at least when you pick up a crack pipe, you KNOW you're screwing up your life. people think of acid as 'safe' and 'natural' -- it's not any of those things.
acid screws with your psyche and takes no prisoners. i cannot imagine it would promote healthy recovery.

Oh yes. I tried it fifty or sixty times. Didn't work. Of course I did not have the benefit of a doctor nor was I doing minute doses.
All kidding aside, read LSD, My Problem Child by Hoffman (the discoverer of LSD's properties) or do a Medline search.

That is absolute utter horseshit. I was aquainted with Leary through Grateful Dead lyricist John Barlow. Wilson *never* took LSD with Leary in his life.
