Discovery Health :: Psychotherapies for Depression Many forms of psychotherapy, including some short-term (10-20 week) therapies, can help depressed individuals. "Talking" therapies help patients gain insight into and resolve their problems through verbal exchange with the therapist, sometimes combined with "homework" assignments between sessions. "Behavioral" therapists help patients learn how to obtain more satisfaction and rewards through their own actions and how to unlearn the behavioral patterns that contribute to or result from their depression. Two of the short-term psychotherapies that research has shown ...

HealthyMinds.org - Healthy minds. Healthy lives. Across the country, students are preparing to start or return to college. This is an exciting time, though for some it’s overwhelming and stressful. Depression, substance use and eating disorders are increasingly common mental health issues on college campuses. According to an American College Health Association survey, the rate of students reporting ever being diagnosed with depression has increased 56 percent in the last six years, from 10 percent in spring 2000 to 16 percent in spring 2005.
Major depression increases the likelihood of substance abuse, impairs school function and influences an individual’s subsequent development in a negative way. Depression can also co-occur with other disorders including physical illnesses and other mental disorders such as anxiety and eating disorders. APA would like to offer information to help college students maintain good mental health.

Kids pack health fair for free checkups Judging by Saturday's huge turnout, ReGenesis Community Health Center next year might have to hold its annual health fair at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Despite the rain, cars spilled out of the Carver Junior High School parking lot for the event, finding makeshift parking spots on curbs, in the grass and beneath trees. Inside the school, the hallway teemed with parents and children waiting in line to register for the health fair or to be screened for asthma, diabetes, pediatric obesity, as well as vision, hearing and dental problems. After ...
Children NEW According to the New York State Coalition for School Based Primary Care , one in five children in New York City have a diagnosable mental, emotional or behavioral disorder, and at least one in ten has a serious emotional disturbance that interferes with their ability to function on a daily basis. Seventy percent of teens with a severe diagnosis do not receive any mental health services, and about 100,000 teens are on waiting lists for mental health services in New York City.
The school based health centers are funded through grants from the state and city government or agreements with private health centers or nearby hospitals. This almost guarantees that not every school will have a center since not every school is near a hospital or able to get a grant from the government. Few of the centers can bill Medicaid and virtually none can bill private insurance, so most are not reimbursed for the services they provide.
The 'atypical' dilemma Never mind that the National Autism Association warns against the overuse of atypicals for children with autism. Last year, when Risperdal became the first and only atypical approved for use in children - specifically for irritability associated with autism - the association warned against potentially serious side effects, including lactation in boys, weight gain and development of an often irreversible movement disorder.

How Can You Distinguish a Budding Pedophile From a Kid With Real Longo and other experts have increasingly advocated for a less punitive approach. Over the past decade, however, public policy has largely moved in the opposite direction. Courts have handed down longer sentences to juveniles for sex offenses, while some states have created tougher probation requirements and, most significant, lumped adolescents with adults in sex-offender legislation.
Among states that do include juveniles in community-notification laws, there is little consistency in terms of who is eligible and for how long. Some jurisdictions allow for judicial discretion on whether to include juveniles or permit youths to petition to be removed after a number of years. In some states, a juvenile has to be 14 to be listed on public sex-offender registries. In others, they may be eligible at 10 or 12. And while some states list only a handful of youths on their Web sites, Kansas currently includes about 340 on the Internet, and Texas lists more than 3,400 people for offenses committed ...

Depressed girls at risk of partner abuse as adults Comments Here is a very interesting research article about a link between depression and later victimization by domestic abuse. While, I don't find this surprising, it's gratifying to see connections that have the potential to influence the focus of psychotherapy. MedlinePlus "Young women who had significant depression symptoms as teenagers were 86 percent more likely than their non-depressed peers to report serious partner violence 5 years later. This association still held after a number of potential risk ...
