Anyone else here with teenage kids?
Last school year, I was asking my sons about drugs in schools. The topic came up, when my oldest mentioned that the precriptions I take... They sell for a high amount. So I asked what sorts of pills, drugs are you talking about.
He said vicoden, percocets, oxycontin, xanax. Crack, coke, ecstasy, marijuana, acid.
I was stumped and shocked on what to say or do. With the threads around here on drug abusers, it made me think about this.
Back in the day when I was in High School, or even Junior High. We had marijuana and acid. Speed. Things like that. I see the increase on the pain meds being abused with teens now. I seen a couple overdoses and deaths of late, with people in their early 20's.
So, how are the teens getting these narcotics to begin with to sell at school?
What can be done to stop it? Can there be anything done really?

The exact same way that everyone else gets them, unscrupulously.
There are Internet Sites that sell many of those drugs without much h***le. According to 60 minutes; kids living in border states are making runs to Mexico and coming back with all sorts of stuff. The big thing they were covering was the level of Soma available in one Phoenix HS. Of course the same sources of supply for the MJ can provide other things as well.
The government is trying to do something. Unfortunately it isn't working and there is to much backlash on to legitimate Dr's and their patients. The only thing that really can be done, is the thing that works in all situations. Raise your children well. Watch them like a Hawk looking for any signs of abuse. If you see it don't ignore it.
Sounds like you are doing pretty good with your son. At least he told you the truth when you asked him about it.

(1) From people with prescriptions mostly. No poster OPs sell schedule II anymore.
(2) Tell the truth..... once you start out with the painkillers, it's a life long relationship and most people wish they never started. Tell them that you flick a switch that can never be turned off. Oh and the xanax: some think benzos are harmless but they are not something a teenager would want to start taking either. http://www.benzo.org.uk/ for the xanax/valium/rohypnol story The truth is scary enough by itself, no need for drug propaganda that most teenagers detect instantly anyway.

I been through it with one teen and not the other.
In Texas the big one is Xanax. Real cheap over the counter in Mexico.
Its about a buck a pill on the streets here. The pills are so small its easy to get across the border. Rurally across our great CHRISTIAN (hehe) red state heartland its meth. And there is nothing worse than meth regarding either health or addiction.
Oxy and Ectasy are $25 and that keeps the use down.
An ounce of standard Mexican pot here is $60.
I hear in California and New York its $250.

this is an issue parents have not been attuned to...HOW much money are their 17 year olds accessing?? doubt they are presidents of GM also ..someone mentioned Narcs are not available on OP pharmacies...this is not true...and the kids know it hawki.....

A few years ago, my oldest son, when in Junior high was suspended from school for 10 days. For MJ use. He was caught in the boys bathroom. When I asked him how long he has been smoking it. He said 2 weeks. That a friend at school was bringing the MJ in and sharing it with him. I guess Peer Pressure? As far as I know, he hasn't smoked any since. For awhile there, I was having him do piss tests. The kind you buy at the store.
Then on the other hand. I smoke it to relieve the pain of Fibro, back and neck pain.
If you see it don't ignore it.
I am open minded with them. I like to be involved and a part of their lives. I find they are truthful. They know they can discuss anything with me. I am still their Mom though. I understand they will feel uncomfortable with opening up about sex.

Yeah, my cabinet was cleaned out too. Not by teens, but adults. I lock them up now. Learned the hard way.

Stealing and selling stuff. I think electronics is still a hot item. Or jewelry.
Or the parents is who the teens are getting the money from. I myself only give money to my kids, if they have earned it. No free ride.
Another way for kids to get the money, is to be a dealer of the narcs and drugs. Its like running a business.
The girls, and I have heard the boys too. Selling their bodies. Prostitution.
To supply the drug addictions.

Most teenagers these days have a lot of money But most OP's that actually deliver what they promise only take credit cards, so if kids are buying drugs online it means that their parents aren't paying much attention to them at all.
The one that got a lot of press several months ago was a 17 year-old boy who was buying drugs with a credit card his parents gave him to buy baseball cards. He had been doing that for quite a while and yet the parents want to blame everyone but themselves, when they are the ones who didn't pay any attention to how he was spending their money.

Sunshyne, Just some friendly advice, "DON'T" reveal to people here openly that you smoke some herb! Chronic pain patients surely aren't the ONLY people who frequent these forums! Who knows who might be reading it also possibly DEA or vindictive people who might try to find out who your doctor is just to report your usuage to screw with you getting your regular meds. I use to be a very staunch supporter of it's usuage in here, but I learned to keep it quiet! Just trying to look out for ya'!

The same places adult junkies get theirs. Theft, dealing, and the worst, prostitution. Not just the girls, but the boys as well. Hell even when I was a youngin 30 some odd years ago there was a neighborhood girl who would do just about anything for a buzz. She was the daughter of the local Bank's president.

That works only so long before they get caught.
I dont see that. None of the kids I know have parents with enough money to give them for much of anything but a movie and a coke.
But then again, one Xanax that knocks me on my *** is a buck.
And the shit comming out of the meth labs is dirt cheap too.
I read that for $100 they can cook enough for one person to stay up for a year. :) There ya go... But its non profit, done for free drugs rather than money.
I wouldnt call it prostitution. Its just having sex with the guys who have the drugs. Or cars, or money...

Acid and X dont bother me much. Its a very non addictive heavy headed deal and something 98% of the people cant do very often even if they like it. Unable to function.
I think the attraction to downers is related to the higher drinking age these days. Its an alternative to getting drunk which is a lot harder to do for the 18 to 20 crowd than it was years ago. Once 21 they leave off it, unless of course they get hooked. But how many do?
Is it that 10% rule that seems to cover everything?
Like Crack during the Reagan years, its now Meth.
Both so addictive that one or two times and your hooked and the fall is hard and fast right to the slammer. Both cheap variations of the mother drug so it hits and hurts the most vulnerable in our society.

Well, I hardly have enough to give them money for that. They earn their money in different ways. Cutting gr***, chores. There are quite a few elderly folks in apartment complexes where I live. They help them out too.
Xanax used to the same thing to me. I take once in awhile, when my nerves are shot.
I am very careful with Xanax. I became suicidal when first taking it. Increase in dreams too. Well, nightmares. Suprressed bad stuff from the past.
I am not familiar with Meth. Maybe I will look more into it. Of course I have heard of it. Most likely its going around in the schools being sold also.
