hi folks, i visited a specialist at St.pauls pain clinic, and discussed my problem i have form betaseron , i was advised i am not a good candidate for any of the rhizotomy procedures, as i would have to have multiple nerve cuts because the neves are intertwined at the level i need work on, so it is far to dangerous and would not be beneficial over time, as it would not last.
i was given a new RX for a drug being used for Ms instead of Neurontin.
Topamax is the drug name, it is for seizures, and other probs, but i was told it works better than neurontin,, for MS treatment, like a step up from neurontin.
has anyone heard of this drug??    Topamax thanx bobD

it was last friday, i started off at the hospital but the st pauls pain clinic is on the 7th floor of a building across the street,, from st pauls hospital,  right beside my old work- wall center, when i was working, i renovated all the rental suites in the apartment tower, from the 30th floor penthouses to the basement. i also did the touch ups on every sute on the suite of dreams floor in the tower, so i fixed up all the damage to each designers suites.
parking in the wall center garage is 6 bucks a day if you get there before 9am,and leave before 6pm, i used to always park for free,  it has good access from granville st bridge into downtown, ,then out one street to the right and back over and out of city fast!!!
i will see my regular doctor on friday to discuss this new med,, i have been to a good website and checked out all the info on ''topamax''  bad possible side effects i was told about by specialist are- eye vision prblem possible leading to glaucoma, possible liver, kidney damage, possible kidney stones, also memory loss, or cognitive problems too!!!
wowww thats very rude list of side effects,, the doc said, the eye vision thing makes your vision blurred, not double,, but whatever you look at leaves a long trace or its shape!!!,, then glaucoma too!!!!!!
i am not sure i will take this med,, i am doing great smoking marijuana,, and taking morphine for my pain condition.
also!! the specialist said the lumps on the front of abdomen have decreased in side, as previous specialists gave description,, but on the bad side the new guy found new lumps on my left side going around to my back,,, this would be why my pain has increased,, the ones in front have shrunk but still send pain messages the new ones are bigger and hurt more and send more messages,  i want to ask about goin for more injections of ''Depomedrol'' into the lumps to try and shrink the new ones down,,  my only future alternative is to have a spinal catheter installed with a button i press and bag attached to my body for life,, no frikin way,, , cause then i will need one for my bladder,, one for puking,, one to carry my pot, and wallet, damn i will have more hoses and tubes into me than terminator does!!!  then i can get more pumps too one fore baclofen, maybe a pacemaker,, soon i will be just a machine!!!,  i will get less miles than an electric car, even if i get recharged regular,  no no no,, i want those 9 out of 10 doctors to condense and concentrate large dose of marijuana into one small pill for me,, each pill must have the thc count of about 15 joints of #1 grade aaa xxx supremeo weed then i will get relief!!!  cause i cant breath in and out fast enough without p***in out to smoke enouigh pot to get relief!!! i would have all 12 hoses of a huge hooka pipe shoved right thru my chest into mylungs then i might get enough into me.!!!
so i am saying i will most likey not take this new drug cause i have cut out neurontin,, and have same amount of pain,, noticed no effect change when i stopped it.
bobD the doctor at st pauls was a very cool doctor, i liked him,  we discussed the marijuana medical issue for 10 minutes!!!
fyi most of the marijuana exemptions in BC come from (get signed)the doctors at the st pauls neurology dept!!!!!
i have a list of reasons i would advise people not to get involved with this MMAR crap,,

Bob, I was on Topamax for a year and a half, along with Neurontin. In my case, the Neurontin works better for me. But then again, the reason I was put on Topamax in the first place was for headache pain. It helped a little at first, but then nothing. I would be careful with the Topamax, as it can cause some parasthesia. For me, it caused a terrible burning sensation. Well, not actually caused, but enhanced it to the point of me wanting to tear my hair out. I am not on it anymore and the burning remains, though not as strong of a sensation. My neuro said the Topamax will cause that type of sensation, though, so be careful. You have been forewarned. If you could take Topamax along with Neurontin, it will help with that type of pain if it happens to you. I would not have been able to get through the day if it hadn't been for the Neurontin. I hope the Topamax doesn't do that to you.
One benefit of Topamax, if you are overweight, is weight loss. The first five months I was on it, I lost 45 pounds. It is being looked at as a possible weight loss drug. It may even be being prescribed for it now. I haven't heard anything about it lately, but I know it was being considered.
Good luck with Topamax, Bob.

yikes. are the lumps due to injection-site reactions?  :{ i probably wouldn't take it either, but whatever you decide, i wish you the best of good fortune!

<>...
thats a good idea,, i plan on tryin that,,!!!
yup from betaseron i injected in 1996,, still bad side effects bothering me, i am one of the 5% that gets this problem from interfuron use.
thanx rose,,  i dont plan on taking this new drug as over the last year my plan was to reduce the number of pills i was taking,  and i have that down to paxil to control my anxiety and morphine for lump pain, from betaseron,, i quit all other meds,, and now only use marijuana , morphine, paxil,  and i am doing ok, without the list of meds i used to take, for me marijuana is treating multiple symptoms of ms,, which let me drop those symptoms relieving drugs, and use 1 joint to treat spazticity, bladder relaxation, anxiety problem, pain, nausea, appetite loss.

I think I would have had the same problems if I would have continued with Rebif. Luckily I hated the red spots on my body and the intense pain so I stopped and put myself on something new. My neuro didn't approve but I made a pain of myself and got him to agree. I know what my pain was like..i can only imagine yours Jen ...

"Bob Davidson" Ill mention something I have experience with.  Depakote.  Its an anti-seizure medication thats sometimes used for neuropathic pain as well.
Its worked for me.  I would get burning on the back of my left leg so bad that Id swear someone was spilling acid on me.  It was so inconsistant that I didnt want to go on meds for it, but finally one day it was hurting so bad I just gave in and decided to give the last anti-seizure medication a try.
Once I got up to the proper dose it worked exactly as it was supposed to.
It has a long and fun list of side effects, but ive noticed none of them, other than a little drowsiness during the day in the begining... and some weight gain. (which I needed)  Maybe adding pot-tea and depakote might work for ya?

"Bob Davidson" phatb...@shaw.ca

the specialist could still make out red blotchy injection site redness, from betaseron,, which my last injection was in 1997!!! 6 years ago!! still visible tissue damage,, and he found new lumps thats were not there on my lst visit to a specialist.
and the intense pain so I my pain is manageable if i dope myself up on morphine,, but i can truthfully say i need the opiate to help me  deal with my pain,,  i am very dissappointed that i wont be getting any help from rhizotomy procedures,, or ''spinal blockers''  cause that means the only other choice from taking morphine in pill form is morphine delivered by spinal catheter.
thanx for your kind words,, it really helps knowing people care, and that i have lots of ears to bend instead of dumping all my shit on my wife who has enough to deal with,, without my complaining all the time.

 hi rob!!!!!
i saw my doctor yesterday and asked about the drug 'Topamax'' , he told me he no longer gives rx's for neurontin, uses primarily topamax now,, he said it is better than neurontin for anti seizure type meds, he said the side effects can be handled by building up your dosage slowly,, he also said it is accepted by more people better than neurontin, with less side effects reported to him,,  he told me it would be beneficial for me.
he also gave me some fast acting morphine to deal with breakthru pain as i know the 24 hour time pills wear off early as i become tolerant of the drug level,  then as i was explaining how proud i was that i have reduced my morphine over the last year,, and quit other pills/drugs completely he leaned over to me and said, '' you have a very serious disease.'' , then explained that i do not want to stop meds if they are helping me, cause that may result in more problems from MS.
then i gave him the latest info on medpot, how scottland is ready to rx the new drug by Gw pharma, to people very soon,, how the MMAR is bullshit,, how people sign away their rights to buy more pot, grow more pot, if they agree to have health canada supply them with their shitty dirtweed,, if they find the pot crappy of useless or their rx amount too little, they cannot buy more pot from a comp***io club or grow it,, they are at the mercy of HC and the HC dirtweed,, for me i consider that Hc is giving out 10% thc pot,, to people who are used to smoking 20% +  thc pot,, now they cannot get the medical effects they have been getting. and then suffer, from an ignorant government, as well our doctors are now storing poundage of pot!!! in their offices,, and it doesn't fit into a medical cabinet  it needs a crate!!! since only select doctors are signing for many poeple they handle all the pot!!!! that means storing pounds of pot!!!! stupid.
depakote?? does anyone know what the generic for this drug is in canada or is it the same name?? depakote?  i will also look into it rob!!, thanks for the info,, sounds very similar to topamax, as my doc said topamax stops the burning sensations fast!!! people have in their extremities. he said topamax is about 3 years old?? around there.
bobD

"Rob Duncan" robdun...@gbronline.com

"Bob Davidson" True.  Trying to unnessessarily lower your dose of meds might not be good.
divalproex sodium.  (Depakote) Its been around for a long while I think.
Its also used in bipolar illness.  So it has many uses.  The side effect profile, while its a long list, isnt as bad as some other drugs.  And the side effects dont seem to appear as often.  Some here on this NG are taking it for pain... others to treat bipolar illness.  I dont remember anyone taking it for epilepsy.  ALthough thats what it was initialy created for.
Nobody really knows why or how the drug works... but they suspect it has something to do with nekkid woman and Alaskan beer elves.
