Should drug testing in high schools become more frequent or even a law? More and more today kids are using drugs, hurting people and themselves and dying. But more specifically should it just be athletes, they are the stereotypical first choice to test. As a former high school athlete I do feel drug testing needs to happen more but its a waste of time and money to test everyone even if it is the safer bet. I don't believe that only athletes should be tested because the majority of those at my fo ...

I have a hypothetical question about interpreting drug test results: Suppose some new performance-enhancing drug has made its way into the pro peloton, and that hypothetically 5% of the cyclists in the Tour are using it. Suppose there is a test for the drug which is 95% accurate, and that we administer this test to the most recent stage winner. My question is, if the stage winner tests positive for the drug, what are the chances that he is actually using the drug?

I was watching the news the other night, and they did a story on a Texas (IIRC) high school where the students are subjected to random drug testing if they want to participate in extracurricular activities. The students have to submit a urine sample when they sign up for these activities, and they are subject to future random tests at any time. This was for all activities, from athletics to chorus to art. While I have never done any illegal drugs (I realize that some people classify alcohol as a ...

The just-released National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) eleventh annual National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse takes an in-depth look at teen parties and parental roles. Joseph A. Califano, Jr., Chairman and President of CASA had this to say about the results of the 2006 survey: "The message of this year's survey is laser sharp: teen drug and alcohol use is a parent problem, not just a teen problem." As with the recent PRIDE annual survey, the evidence of a disconnect between parent and teen ...
Warning Signs | Stop Teen Drug Addiction | Awareness and Prevention of I wish I'd known the advantages of drug testing my child. Early intervention can be critical in saving a child from addiction. Because teens lie about drug use, there is no way to verify use without drug testing. Some parents think drug testing violates trust, but teens that are not using drugs have no trust to lose. Teens that have nothing to hide – hide nothing. The safety and well being of your child must be your first priority.

ONDCP Opposes Student Drug Testing Regulations in New Jersey Right now, it is common for drug tests to be administered by school nurses, without sufficient training in administering tests or interpreting the results. Most schools also use cheaper, less accurate on-site drug testing technology rather than state-licensed clinical laboratories. A recent study published in Pediatrics , the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that even under rigorous conditions, as many as 21% of tests returned false positives, and often completely missed the use of certain drugs such as OxyCodone.
The danger of erroneous results is one of many problems with random student drug testing. Testing may prompt students to drink more alcohol, which is not checked in most drug tests. It can also deter students from participating in extracurricular activities, which are the best proven resource for preventing teen drug use. Random drug testing, on the other hand, is not proven effective in scientific literature. In fact, the largest study on the subject concluded that random drug testing made no impact on drug use rates among students.
Don't Blame Barry Waxman's bill may still be floating around Capitol Hill, but baseball isn't waiting around. In response to the steroid hearings and the threat of regulation, last year Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig appointed former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell to investigate the sport. In June, more than a year after its formation, Mitchell's team announced its first confirmed interview with an active player, the hapless and hobbled Yankee designated hitter, Jason Giambi. Waxman likes to grandstand, and employing the tried and true ...
Data on steroid use in teens is ambiguous, but can give some indication of its prevalence in teen populations. There are two large-scale studies that track drug use, including steroids, in teens nationally: the Monitoring the Future study conducted by the University of Michigan, and a study run by the CDC called the Youth Risk Behavior Survey . The YRBS notes higher incidences of steroid use among different teen populations across the board (a discrepancy which may have something to do with the wording on the questionnaire ), but the YRBS and the MTF studies each found rising incidences of steroid use among teens ...

Drug Czar Visits Austin U.S “drug czar” John Walters was in Austin today, getting the Administration’s product out on local media’s corners. Walters, whose official title is Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, held a closed-door meeting with a variety of local officials (including new Austin PD chief Art Acevedo , left) as part of Bush’s community-based prevention program. The topic of his media briefing afterwards was increased teen abuse of prescription drugs. Really, though, what he was stumping for was every Draconian’s favorite prevention method: random, ...
Walters called the Supreme Court decision allowing random testing a “watershed moment” in his office’s fight against drugs. The Supreme Court, employing some twisted logic , allowed testing of students involved in voluntary extracurriculars, but only so long as the testing was not used to punish students. Since then the Administration has been shilling for testing programs, throwing out grants to any takers. Texas , for one, just passed random steroid testing for high school athletes. Proponents’ main argument is that testing gives students an escape ...
