The Feds appear to have won a battle in the WoD, by eliminating a major source of LSD production.
http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?click_id=117&art_id=qw1072017542877B24... 'Fewer American teenagers are taking drugs' December 21 2003 at 04:39PM By Maggie Fox Washington - An annual survey by the United States government showed a marked decline in the number of American teenagers using illegal drugs, officials said on Friday.
Drug use fell by 11 percent among students between the ages of 13 and 18 over the past two years, according to the survey.
"Four hundred thousand young people are not using drugs today because of that decline," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson.
"It is certainly an indication our message is getting out." The numbers have been sliding in recent years after peaking in the mid-1990s.
"Teen drug use has reached a level that we haven't seen in nearly a decade," said John Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
The White House set a goal of reducing illegal drug use by 10 percent by this year and had achieved that with teens, said Thompson, who nonetheless expressed concern about a rise in the the illegal use of painkillers like oxycontin.
Several surveys have also shown reductions in teen smoking and drinking, health officials said.
"Instances of teenagers being drunk have gone down," said Walters.
"Young people deserve the credit." He said there was no single reason for the decline, but a government advertising campaign, together with community and parental efforts had all contributed. The five-year goal is a 25 percent reduction in teen drug use.
Crackdowns on supply also seemed to work, Walters said, citing the seizure of a giant LSD lab in an Oregon missile silo in 2000, believed to have made the equivalent of about 20 million doses. "We didn't even fully understand how centralized LSD production was," Walters said.
The number of teens reporting they had used LSD fell to 3.7 percent this year from 6.6 percent two years ago, according to the survey, while Health and Human Services said lifetime use of ecstasy had dropped to 5.5 percent from 8 percent.
The survey also found the teen use of alcohol and cigarettes has declined every year since the mid 1990s.
The University of Michigan has been interviewing students since 1975 for the survey, which is based on questions posed to about 48 000 students at nearly 400 schools nationwide.

Video piracy. All the kids are wired on xbox and ps2. Instead of expanding their minds, they've been winnowed down to tv screens and joysticks. Games are $50/hit, but they p*** through the system unmetabolized, so you can redose, endlessly. Kids these days... hands on the controllers. Reminds me of when we used to gather round the hookah.

Yeah, any time I spend playing video games, I'm already on drugs. Also, I think lsd is coming back, slowly.

Is it possible that where you live may be statistically atypical? This is a national survey. And, fairly well respected. It could be that where you live things are different than average. Also, another possibility occurs to me. This is a study of all drug *use*. Not "abuse" in the clinical sense that it causes the person significant problems. It is quite possible that serious drug abuse that would require a trip to the ER is up amongst teenagers, and yet overall drug use is down. Maybe kids today smoke pot less, yet use drug more likely to require hospitalization at a greater frequency.
"The White House set a goal of reducing illegal drug use by 10 percent by this year and had achieved that with teens, said Thompson, who nonetheless expressed concern about a rise in the the illegal use of painkillers like oxycontin." According to that, opiate abuse amongst kids is up. For the overall numbers to be down, that likely means other (softer) drugs are used less. Note they specifically mentioned (which I emphasized) LSD use is way down. It could be kids are tripping less, yet end up in the ER more needing a shot of nalaxone because of an opiate overdose. That also mentioned cigarette use being down amongst teenagers as being part of the reason for the decline. Teenyboppers don't end up much in the ER from smoking a Camel cigarette.

Interesting. This doesn't agree with the data on http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/lsd/lsd_stats.shtml Percentage for 2001 is 10.9 according to the above.
Anyway, if kids are really switching from LSD to painkillers like oxycontin, as the article says, I don't see why this is such a great achievement of the war on drugs.

http://www.ktvotv3.com/Global/story.asp?S=1575735&nav=1LFsJqOn "(Ottumwa) -- "Monitoring the Future" is a national survey that is conducted each year to a total of 50,000 students in 8th, 10th and 12th grades that looks at the behaviors and attitudes among young American adults. Recently, they published a report that shows a decline in drug use among teenagers." The Erowid stats are just 12th graders. This study also measures 8th and 10th graders. If you factor them in, it makes a lot of sense LSD usage rates would be much lower. Particularly if LSD has become increasing scarce in the last 2 years. Many of the younger kids wouldn't have been able to score LSD even if they had been looking.
