Hi all - After 20 years of drinking I found myself consuming a 30 pack every other day. Then I was diagnosed with Steato Hepatits. I kept on drinking (dumb!).....
Well, now I've moved to another state and decided to use the change in venue to help me quit. So far, so good. My Dr. perscribed me Librium to help but I'm almost out (I take one every day or so in the evenings if my tension spikes).
Are there alternative herbs or meds to help me?

On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 07:51:34 -0600, "Ken Bessler" A method tried by alcoholics throughout the ages :) Hope it works out.  In my experience, some other action was also necessary.  Relocation was not an answer because I was running from a problem within myself.
Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) is a benzodiazepine, used as a short-term medication for detox from alcohol.  It's from the same family of drugs as valium (Diazepam).  It is 2.5x stronger than valium, and has a shorter half-life.  It's highly addictive, not recommended for anything other than very short-term dosage. so you're probably supposed to be almost out.
http://www.benzo.org.uk/FAQ1.1.htm As for alternatives, I'm not aware of any drugs that cure alcoholism.
Antabuse may help for a while, but that is not a long-term solution either.

I didn't just move - my ex lives with my 4 sons just 5 blocks away and because she wasn't getting along with son #2, I took him in. So, you see, it's not just a change of venue - I don't want to expose my son to alcoholic behaviour. Then there is the money issue - I'm a disabled veteran and I get a small disability pension from the government every month. Before, I was working part time which gave me the additional income to support $18.27 in beer every 48 hours. Now, I'm not working and that means a loss of my beer money. Even if I decided to drink, I'd have to go to the pawn shop or spend my grocery money on booze.
No Thanks!
And I fully agree with Rosie - Quitting drinking is FAR easier than quitting smoking. That's experience talking as I have now done both.
What worries me is the future - will the longing for a beer after every Miller commercial fade away eventually? I hope so. With smokes the major cravings disapeared after 3 weeks but I still can't let my guard down - as they say in alt.support.stop-smoking, I'm one smoke away from a pack a day.....
Thanks Blue Moon for the warning about Librium - I was thinking about going to the Dr. and getting a refill but now I think I'll just tough it out without it.

On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 20:57:31 GMT, "rosie readandpost" What is?  Read the link as written by a professor in medicine and then tell me it's nonsense.
http://www.benzo.org.uk/bzequiv.htm    Benzo                Half-life (hrs)       Approximately Equivalent                        [active metabolite]          Oral dosages (mg)3 Diazepam (Valium)             20-100 [36-200]                       10 Chlordiazepoxide (Librium)                5-30 [36-200]                       25 Clearly they are stating that the equivalent dosage is far higher with Librium than with Valium, and the half-life is far shorter.  So what is nonsense?
I never said it isn't.  I believe I specifically said it's used for short-term detox from alcohol.  It is also highly addictive.  That's a fact.

THAT is our experience ken, but not everyones!
ken, are you using any support group at all?
do you want to go out to AA meetings?
how about one online? you can check them out here: http://www.aa-intergroup.org/ ken, BM is NOT a doctor, and you ought to discuss any "left over" withdrawal symptoms with a professional.
please get your general health checked out!

sorry BM, your interpretation of that chart is totally wrong!
librium does not equal valium.
not then, not now, not ever!

Peter Armstrong pe...@parmstrong20.freeserve.co.uk

Hi It is well established that the shorter the half life of a benzodiazepine drug the more rapidly is the dependancy, and the more difficult it is to discontinue. For this reason benzodiazepine dependancy is treated by changing from e.g. lorazepam (short half life) to diazepam (long half life) Peter (30 years of pharmacological knowledge, but praying that that is not my half-life :-) )

Peter Armstrong pe...@parmstrong20.freeserve.co.uk

Hi Rosie Not very different in its half life though: "the half-life of the drug [chlordiazepoxide] is between 24 and 48 hours" Not often I disagree with what posts of yours I read Hug from me Peter

"rosie readandpost" readandpostREMOVET...@yahoo.com

peter, there is alot more to consider  when selecting a drug for a "specific" purpose.
(in this case detox).
half life is NOT as important when considering that purpose.
there is truly QUITE  a difference between Chlordiazepoxide and Diazepam, and its uses, and abuses!
:) thanks for the hug!

On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 21:42:16 GMT, "rosie readandpost" I'm quite sure I did not say librium equals valium.  Where did I say that?  I very specifically said that librium is different to valium, in that it's much stronger and has a shorter half-life.  However, it is true to say that both are benzodiazepines, both are addictive, and both are prescribed by medics for alcohol detox.

On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 15:20:58 -0600, "Ken Bessler" Well I also did both, and my own experience is that quitting drinking was far worse.
I would go back to the doc, not least because he's hopefully said you need close monitoring whilst on the librium.  Just don't expect just another prescription for librium (and if he gives you one, as many docs have been inclined to do, I'd question the wisdom of it).  He could prescribe antabuse to keep you from drinking while you get your head into recovery.

On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 16:25:09 -0600, "Ken Bessler" I'm afraid there's friction between Rosie and anyone at all who expresses dissatisfaction with the medical profession's muddy waters of legalised drug dealing, or asks simple questions about depression because she perceives such questions as personal confrontation (even when they're clearly not).  So she's instigated friction with a lot of people, and is fawny with those who toe her line.
