Intervention and Treatment - Teen Depression - mood disorders Some adolescents will need antidepressant medication to help them through a major depression. The most commonly used antidepressants are SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is important that some form of psychotherapy be used in conjunction with any medications. Cognitive-behavioral therapy has proven to be the most effective for adolescents. Family therapy is also an important part of treatment for teens with depression or other mood disorders.
