I have recently learnt that people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also have social difficulties, some of their symptoms appear very like AS. SAD is a form of depression and a sleep disorder that affects people only in winter when there is less sunlight. I did a little research and found that people with AS are far more likely to have insomnia (and possibly also SAD). In a recent study by Pekka Tani et al. (2003) of people AS, they found almost 90% had insomnia. Pekka Tani et al., Insomni ...

In the news, today: U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell had this response to Saddam Hussein's claims that he has no weapons of mass destruction: "Prove it." I can see how one could go about proving he has something, but how do you prove you don't have something? I thought Colin (invariably mispronounced, here, as Colon) was brighter, or was this just war rhetoric? -- Charles Riggs chriggs |at| eircom |dot| com

Teen Pregnancy - womenshealthchannel Teen pregnancy rates in the United States have declined steadily in recent years. More than 60 of every 1000 teenage women gave birth in 1991 and 41 per 1000 in 2004 (the last year for which data are available). This decline is thought to be attributed to more effective birth control practice and decreased sexual activity among teens. The most dramatic reduction23%has occurred among African American teenagers.
Still, teenage pregnancy rates remain high. In the United States, approximately 1 million teenage girls become pregnant every year. As many as 5% of teenage girls give birth and, in 1997, about 13% of U.S. births were to teens. About 25% of teenage girls who give birth have another baby within 2 years. In order to lower teenage birthrates, teens must be educated about sex and the consequences of pregnancy .
Mental Health: Schizoaffective Disorder Schizoaffective disorder is a life-long illness that can impact all areas of daily living, including work or school, social contacts and relationships. Most people with this illness have periodic episodes, called relapses, when their symptoms surface. While there is no cure for schizoaffective disorder, symptoms often can be controlled with proper treatment.
Because people with schizoaffective disorder have symptoms of two separate mental illnesses, it is often misdiagnosed. Some people may be misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia, and others may be misdiagnosed with a mood disorder. As a result, it is difficult to determine exactly how many people actually are affected by schizoaffective disorder. However, it is believed to be less common than either schizophrenia or affective disorder alone. Estimates suggest that about one in every 200 people (0.5%) develops schizoaffective disorder at some time during his or her life.
Seasonal Affective Disorder: The Winter Blues: Are You SAD? A diagnosis of SAD requires that a person has experienced depression and other symptoms in at least 2 consecutive winters followed by non-depressed periods in spring and summer. Also, there must be no other explanation for the changes in mood and behaviour. NOTE: Your symptoms can help a physician or psychologist to make a diagnosis of SAD; however, not everyone experiences the same or all of the symptoms listed above. Therefore, if you notice that you are experiencing some of the signs and symptoms listed, it would be a good idea to check it out with a physician and/or a psychologist. What causes SAD? It is thought ...
Light therapy: The current treatment of choice is light therapy. Light therapy involves exposing people to a special type of light box or a light visor like cap for an average of 30 minutes a day throughout the fall and winter months. The lights emitted from these bulbs are 10-20 times brighter than ordinary indoor lights. What are the side effects to Light therapy? Light therapy appears to have very few adverse side effects. Some of these effects include irritability; insomnia (inability to sleep) if exposure is late in the day; ...
