I have no problem falling asleep in the evening. On the contrary, if I sit down and relax, watching TV or listening to music, on a weekday evening, it is impossible to stay awake. I think this is due to a combination of Xanax, sleeping less than eight hours/night during the week, and exhaustion from a stressful day at work.
Toward the end of the night, I always have anxious and fearful dreams.
Perhaps this is because the Xanax has worn off by then.
Does anyone else here have similar experiences?

Dear Marty, How is your anxiety during the day? My dreams or nightmares are usually a reflection of what is going on during my waking hours. The more anxiety or stressed I am feeling during the day the more likely I am to have anxious dreams or nightmares. You mention feeling stressed from work and also getting less than 8 hours sleep. I am also prone to nightmares if my sleep patterns get thrown off for more than a few days.
If you are dealing with a lot of daytime anxiety and stress, perhaps it is time to talk to your doctor about it. Take care :) Jackie ~*~The one law that does not change is that everything changes, and the hardship I was bearing today was only a breath away from the pleasures I would have tomorrow, and those pleasures would be all the richer because of the memories of this I was enduring~*~ ~Louis L'Amour~

Thanks. I'm always anxious during the day, but 3-4 times a day I take 1 mg Xanax, which controls my anxiety fairly well. Toward the end of the night, it wears off, so I guess that is why my anxiety pops up then and I have nightmares.

Dear Marty, You say the Xanax controls your anxiety fairy well.....perhaps it`s possible to have your anxiety controlled better than that. You might want to talk to your doctor about tweaking your Xanax dose a bit or switching over to a longer acting benzo such as Klonopin. With the longer acting benzos, you don`t experience interdosing anxiety that you can get with the Xanax.

Thanks. Yes, perhaps it is worth trying Klonopin. I'm just wondering whether it would be bad for me not to have my usual anxious and fearful dreams.
Maybe I need to have them in order to stay sane?

When I was taking Xanax four times per day (including an evening dose) I would wake up early in the AM in withdrawal, take my morning dose of Xanax, and then return to sleep. That's one of the reasons I switched over to Klonopin which is longer acting and didn't result in any interdose anxiety or morning withdrawal.

Im the opposite... I have problems initially falling asleep some nights..
Nothing a good rub down of ben gay cant fix.... but I can fall asleep anytime during any day for any reason... I fight sleep all day long.
Sometimes I have to take a valium to get myself to sleep. I personally think we need a bigger bed. My husband and I have a full sized bed... which is fine, except I love to SPRAWL so I wake up feeling like I got beat up all night.
Good luck Stacy

I had that and actually took a 5th dose at that time. When Xanax XR will be available in the US in a few months (somewhere early in 2003 or so I'm told) this problem of interdose anxiety will vanish forever. I am living proof.

Dear Marty, I`ve always been a dreamer, rarely a night goes by that I don`t have a dream. I think I would miss it if I stopped dreaming :) The nightmares and anxious dreams I can do without. However, they can serve as a wake up call that I`m living with too much anxiety and stress and I must do something about it. I think you would feel better if you had less anxious dreams.

That is great news. I'll ask my doctor about it.

Yesterday, I didn't take my third dose of Xanax in the evening. At bedtime, I felt sleepy and not very anxious, so I thought I would sleep ok without it.
That was a mistake! It took longer than usual to fall asleep. Also, I woke up many times during the night. My sleep was filled with an endless sequence of anxious dreams.
Lesson learned: not to skip that third daily dose of Xanax.
