advice for getting help

(6 Messages)

I need advice on how to get help for depression more quickly than I currently am. Heres my situation. I'm currently in college and I've been depressed (sometimes worse than others) for several years; probably since my junior or senior year of high school. I've been diagnosed with clinical depression in the past by both a university psychiatrist and a neurologist who was also a licensed psychiatrist. I rejected the diagnosis both times since I felt my problem was a concurrent condition and if tha ...

Getting help for a friend

(16 Messages)

A neighbor and friend (62 yrs.) has exhibited signs of Alzheimer's for a while now. I know that her doctor recommended some additional testing or consultation about a month ago. At first she didn't follow through, then the doctor (bless his heart)scheduled the appointment for her. She forgot about it three times (twice in one day) and I'm not sure if she actually ever went. 2 weeks ago, she had knee surgery and has seemed even more confused and forgetful. (She doesn't think the doctor gave her a ...

Is there no one who can help this guy?

(10 Messages)

Helping Your Children Navigate Through Their Teenage Years TeensHelping Your Children Navigate Through Their Teenage Years - Teens Social workers, mental health counselors, psychiatric nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists, among others, all have different kinds of training and skills, and provide different types of treatment. In therapy sessions, all of these mental health professionals help people talk about their experiences, thoughts and feelings, in order to solve personal and family problems and treat mental illness.

Psychiatrists and other medical doctors can determine if there are other physical illnesses that may be contributing to the problem and can prescribe medicine when this is determined to be an important part of the treatment. Medications are available that effectively treat mental illnesses that are severe or disabling. They are often used in combination with therapy. Your family physician or school guidance counselor can help you assess what type of professional help you need.

Help Your Teen Reduce Stress Children amp stress Revolution HealthHelp Your Teen Reduce Stress - Children & stress - Revolution Health Stress is the body’s way of preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina and heightened alertness. Our nervous systems kick into overdrive, triggering the fight or flight response — our heart rate increases, we breathe faster, our blood pressure rises, our metabolism speeds up, our pupils dilate and we start sweating. Now we’re ready to deal with a true emergency, like slamming on the brakes to avoid an accident or running away from a dangerous situation.

Most of the time, though, we’re not in real physical danger, so our nervous systems return to their normal states. In a more typical stressful situation, like when a teen is about to take a final exam or is up at bat, his body still needs to feel enough stress to remain up to the task. But if his body is in true fight or flight mode — or if his stress response overreacts or fails to turn off — chances are he won’t be able to function at all.
