I actually dont understand why the principal thinks that Buffy is in any way qualified for this job.  Unless, of course, he is a bad guy looking to get Buffy in a bad situation.

There's lots you don't understand. That's nothing new.

Tammus wrote I think first episodes usually are.  The important thing is setting up the season, and I'm very exited about how that is looking so far.
As for the Dawn Gang, I console myself with the thought that she made friends on her first day WAY too easily.  No good can come of it.  Whatever Evil lured her into that basement also made sure she ended up with those two, for what evil purpose we know not.
So cheer up!  :-)

ConnMoore opinioned: Well, I from the way it was offered her, I suspect that in "Real Life" she would not be called a guidance counselor but rather a "peer counselor". Sort of a guidance counselor-lite. For peer counseling (from experiences with folks I know who do it) the expected training/qualifications are much less.
Not saying that makes them less worthwhile but......
Anyway, I think that that is an "out" that might be used as one of the cl***ic JW throw away lines in the next week or three.....

Please watch the episode again. The principle did not offer her a guidance counselor position.

While that is true, the previews billed the next show as "Buffy the Guidance Consellor".

klcro ...@is06.fas.harvard.edu (Kevin Croxen)

No sense getting too hung up over that. Then one would have to begin to ask questions like: Why was there never any criminal investigation over what appeared to be a senseless terrorist bombing of the original high school by the school's clearly disturbed librarian and a group of troubled students? Particularly when the bombing evidently resulted in the deaths of the town's mayor and the school's principal, among others? Sure, _we_ know all about the evil hellmouth and 40 foot-tall demon snake, but how well would that have played with the state and federal investigators?
Better to let BtVS plots just gallop along and not worry too much about them. The plots are never airtight and are only occasionally bowling-ball tight. Picking them apart, while simple, just detracts from the enjoyment of the story premises, the character interactions, and the flow of the dialogue.

It was a joke. Much more humorous to say "Buffy the Guidance Counselor" than "Buffy the Community Outreach Counselor".

connmo ...@aol.com (ConnMoore)

The principal offerering her ANY postiion where the school is going to pay her would indicate that she is qualified for the work.  What is Buffy qualified for?

smau ...@yahoo.com (Smaug69)

Did they specifically use the words "Guidance Counselor?" That would seem odd if they did. Maybe ME has nothing to do with the previews, just like they don't do the little episode descriptions for TV Guide and other similar things.

Slow? Not hardly. You think that was slow, you probably shouldn't watch the first ep. of Smallville. Yeesh, that one took 3/4 of the night.

The people who make the previews actually have nothing to do with the actual production of the show, and sometimes they do and say things that are deliberately misleading.

Well, she's qualified to be a substitute teacher, for one. A lunch lady, a security guard, a janitor, secretary, bus driver, there are tons of positions in the schools that do not require college degrees. (Hell, Willow was a substitute teacher as a junior in high school, which is not impossible. A high school diploma is usually wanted, but the school knew her and made an exception. Plus, she was cheaper than a real teacher, I'm sure they paid her as a sub, despite the fact a sub is supposed to be working directly off a teacher's lesson plans and materials, and Willow had to make some of her own. Heck, for all I know, she worked for the reward of getting a 100 in the that cl***.) And while I've never heard of this 'community outreach' concept, parents end up in paid positions to interact with the students all the time.

The principal clearly said that this wasn't a guidance counselor position "The school already has one of those" but more of a community/older peer counselor for a couple of days a week and very little pay.   Essentially, it is one of those rehabiliated troublemaker comes on campus to work with the current troublemakers jobs.

On Wed, 25 Sep 2002 18:49:30 -0400, "David Cheatham" There's no way any school would let a high school junior teach a cl*** without an adult in the cl***room supervising.  Could you imagine the lawsuit if anything went wrong?  And what was Willow supposed to do with her own cl***es when she was covering a full teacher's load.
What could happen is that a substitute teacher would be in nominal charge but Willow would be doing the actual teaching for the advanced cl*** which a substitute wouldn't be able to handle.
