WWOT: A very alternative high school

(25 Messages)

"The city is opening a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students - the first of its kind in the nation, The Post has learned. Operating for two decades as a small alternative program with just two classrooms, the new Harvey Milk HS officially opens as a stand-alone public school with 100 students in September. " --I'm not totally sure what to make of this, to be honest. I can see why some think it's a great idea, but somehow it seems a little like a n ...

Lousy mood today

(22 Messages)

I'm in a lousy mood. I want to pull the wings off people. Someone post something to cheer me up. Do something funny. Dig up Margaret Dumont so you can hit her with a pie or something. Rhubarb makes a good throwin' pie, especially in the hands of a chimp on a tricycle. Or just figure out a way that a chimp can give a robot a wedgie. -- K. How about a robot made out of pies hurling himself at Margaret Dumont? The robot could be built by the chimp.

Schools Abandon Spanking

Schools spare the rod, train the child By Renee Wightman Of the Oakland [county, Michigan] Press Monday, June 11, 2001 page A1 Most people above a certain age have their own special memory of corporal punishment in school. For some, its the image of a ruler-wielding teacher. For others, its the coach reaching for the dreaded board of education, often a wooden paddle punched with holes to make it more aerodynamic. But making bottoms sore in school has been illegal in Michigan since 1988. Today, s ...

Teenscreen Adolescent suicide and mental health screening programsTeenscreen: Adolescent suicide and mental health screening programs History The first time that the Executive Director of the Suicide & Crisis Center of Dallas heard about the Columbia University TeenScreen Program, she was watching special programming about teen suicide on the A&E channel. At the time, the program was solely based in the New York City area, and the activities of the SCC revolved mainly around education and community outreach. Their director believed that at-risk teenagers should be identified before it was too late, but there was no funding for the SCC to develop a program similar to TeenScreen.

Today Since implementing the screening process in the juvenile justice setting, the Dallas TeenScreen Program has plans to expand to two Catholic High Schools in the Dallas area. In the spirit of partnership, the Catholic Diocese of Dallas hopes to make mental health check-ups available to all the teenagers in the Catholic school system. The Suicide & Crisis Center is also making plans to partner with a Dallas school district to offer district-wide screening in 2004.

Youth Suicide Prevention RESPONSEYouth Suicide Prevention - RESPONSE RESPONSE also provides sample guidelines (see Resources and Tools on this page) for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. It is recommended that these guidelines be integrated into the school's crisis response plan. If a school district does not require a drafted policy for suicide prevention, a school may choose to adopt guidelines as an alternative. Regardless, the school board should be notified and presented with the guidelines and program for approval. The instruction/curriculum department at each district should also be provided with a copy of RESPONSE for review and approval.

The Never Enough student and inservice videos were developed in collaboration with OutreachArts and Kirk D. Wolfe, MD. Both are available in the RESPONSE school kit as part of the RESPONSE program. OutreachArts, Inc. is a nationally recognized educational film company that works with various non-profits and their funders to help provide an innovative educational approach to help increase awareness about crucial health and social issues.

Killing the Gospel Back Burner teenage suicide Catholic NewKilling the Gospel - Back Burner - teenage suicide Catholic New The church was full--Catholics, Protestants, nonbelievers. We sang the old standby "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," as the priest came up the aisle. There was something comforting in the familiarity of the music and the location. After all, this is where Mark had been an altar boy and active in our Youth Group. We had watched him grow up here. He was one of four boys--Matthew, Mark, Luke and John--from a local blue collar family. Of the four "gospels," Mark was the sensitive one.

In the lead-up to the funeral, we asked ourselves, how could this have happened? How could Mark have been allowed to die in such a seemingly unloved manner. His manner of death was utterly tragic. One school morning, while his brothers were packing their lunch kits, Mark went and hung himself--death seemingly preferable to another ride on the yellow school bus to the high school in the town up the road.

Depression in School age Children and AdolescentsDepression in School -age Children and Adolescents The statistics are startling. As many as 8 percent of adolescents attempt suicide today. And completed suicides have increased by 300 percent over the last 30 years. (Girls make more attempts at suicide, but boys complete suicide four to five times as often as girls.) It is also known that 60-80 percent of suicide victims have a depressive disorder. A 1998 study showed, however, that only 7 percent of suicide victims are receiving mental health care at the time of their death.

Children can experience depression at any age , even shortly after birth. In very young children, depression can manifest in a number of ways including failure to thrive, disrupted attachments to others, developmental delays, social withdrawal, separation anxiety, sleeping and eating problems, and dangerous behaviors. For the purposes of this article, however, we will focus on school-aged children and adolescents.
