Some things I found odd: abortion>up to 80 days for female fetus and up to 40 days for male fetus.
How you were supposed to know if it was a boy or girl is beyond me.
Obviously St. Gus had a soft spot for boys. You could only kill them 40 days after procreation then you were stuck. Girls though, could be offed up to 80 days. Does anyone else think this guy was not the sharpest tool in the shed?
sexual>intercourse only for procreation.
Wasn't this guy a cloistered monk?
Yet he gave us rules about intercourse? Interesting!
Here's an oddity, one pope makes a rule the next pope says it was wrong? How do we know who was right? Maybe they didn't either!
Napoleon>III acknowledging papal infallibility. France??™s population experienced a>sharp decrease over the previous 60 years.
This is amazing! The pope did that so he could be declared infallible?
The more I know the stranger it gets. The nuns sure never told us that one!

How on earth did they know back then the sex of the fetus?
You might want to research more on her. Some think she was an outright racist who wanted to rid the world of "undesirables" with her agenda. Some of the information regarding her may be hard to dig out because it is not pc.
We are told in scripture that to suffer for doing wrong is unprofitable. Only suffering for doing the right thing counts.
Unrealistic, of course, but not necessarily totally wrong from God's point of view.
Yes, I knew he was catholic and I might argue that he didn't necessarily make a valuable contribution to humanity. The facts aren't all in yet and may not be all in for a very long time.
Terrible disappointment to many and (it was PaulVI) which now has become a huge stumbling block. I was given some very good advice by my brother in law who is not catholic. If you are going to err it is better to err on the side of caution. I'm not intimating that Paul VI erred; I'm intimating that sometimes it might be wise to give the church the benefit of the doubt in a difficult teaching.
The same court who gave us Roe vs. Wade. I wouldn't use the Supreme Court for my personal moral comp***.
To his possible eternal shame. He also vetoed partial birth abortion legislation in a spirit of in your face to the opponents. The pope issued a chilling comment at this juncture, not reported in the US: A civilization who ceases to value life will not survive long (paraphrased). See the London Tablet, sorry I searched and searched my back issues but could never find it.
Most of us know that is wrong.
Bless you, Dawn. I haven't failed to note, as JMKerrigan did, that you went from ultra-conservative to dissenting over a very short public period, probably a lengthy personal questioning, but if the church happens to be right about this difficult teaching, there could be consequences. Relying on the medical profession to spare one possible consequences from an informed decision is a slippery slope.

Difficult. What of cases where the child is made pregnant by a family member and is wanting to keep it quite.
Would you support parents forcing a child to carry to term against the child's wishes?
I am neither for this or against it. Each case should be weighed on its own merits.

I helped a girl who was homeless at 14 because she had been made pregnant by her brother and the family had blamed her and basically thrown her out of the house.
There were also many cases where the girls father was the child.

JMJ Ms. Sanger devoted her entire life to what she called "her cause", the birth control movement. She believed man's social and economiuc situation in life would be determined almost entirely by his ability to survive, and that the benevolence and charitable movements of society had thrown "out of balance" all of nature, by keeping alive those who should have died through natural selection. These people lived in slums, bred like rabbits, and were likely to overrun the boundaries of their neighborhoods, marrying others and thus "contaminating" the better elements of society with their inferior genes.
(Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization, p.80, 179) Her slogans for the birth control movement were things like , "More children from the fit, less from the unfit" and "Birth control: to create a race of thoroughbreds" (MS, birth Control Review, May 1919, vol III no 5, p 12).
Basically, she hoped to use artificial means of birth control as a way for the socially elite (largely white well educated and wealthy) to keep down the numbers in the lower eschelons of society. To promote this agenda, she of course had to make the idea of artificial birth control (which was categorically condemend by every single Christian denomination until the mid to late 1930's) palatable to these "lesser beings." She started on this path with an apparently sincere desire to ease the terrible conditions she saw in the slums of her day, but her sympathy turned to disdain and her original intent to help became an intent to control "the human weeds" so as to protect those more superior, such as herself.
In April of 1933 she laid out a specific plan for "peaceful genocide" of those human weeds, whom she felt were feebleminded and irresponsible breeders, called "The Plan for Peace" (Birth Control Review, vol 16, no 4, p.107) It included shutting down immigration, forced or, in some cases, bribed sterilization and complete physical segregation of the "undesirable" parts of society. She particularly wanted to reduce the number of black children born. Her writings during the thirties bear a frightening resemblance to the writings of many German Nazi's at the same time. When the American public began to note the similarities, her group backpedaled and began working on a "soft sell and pastel" version of the same ideas.
Today Planned Parenthood, which she founded, still works from this "soft sell" platform.
Sources used for most of the facts herein: "The Pivot of Civilization", by Margaret Sanger (this book is out of print and very hard to get ahold of, I had a loaned copy via interlibrary loan and was asked to put a deposit down on it when I checked it out!!!!), also "Margaret Sanger: The Father of Modern Society" by Elasah Drogin, published by CUL press BTW One of her chief backers in setting Planned Parenthood up (money wise) was John D. Rockerfeller(sp) Sr. of Standard Oil fame. I understand the Rockerfeller Family is very much still involved in birth control at the UN level now.

Thanks Scott, I do not support abortion, but I do support birth control methods.
My only experience with clinics was when I took clients to have exams.
Planned Parenthood took Medicaid cards, and that was why we used them. My experience with right to lifers was very negative and disappointing. Most were Catholics and I just could not understand that.

I presumed that was your intent, and it is interesting. Some of these facts need to be examined through wider lenses than simply catholic ones. The protestant world has been rocked by the downside of the birth control issues (liberating but enslaving) and we are beginning to reap what we have sown. It is not easy to sort through it all. Far be it from me to take you to task for anything; I merely wanted to ensure and clarify . . . a lot of things . . . to myself first and foremost.

Back when parental permission was required, when this sort of case came up, the child was ***igned a court appointed advocate to meet with the child and was allowed to sign for her. I would want to know if my child was pregnant and considering an abortion. Many girls panic and think their parents are going to kill them for getting pregnant. Many worry for nothing, and with their parents can make the right decision for her. I can tell in less than 5 minutes who has real reason to fear telling, from those who are on such an emotional roller coaster that they are not thinking clearly, and have magnified their parents reaction 100 times worse than it would ever be. In my state a minor can have an abortion on demand but needs parental permission for a tattoo or body piercings. I guess the reasoning is tattoo's and piercing leave a permanent mark, abortions don't.

billu bi...@hotmail.com
This is a misstatement. It was considered the time of 'ensoulment' according to Augustine (who could not make his theory dogma). If a fetus was aborted after this time it was murder, before that Augustine considered it sinful. It seems like a list from some misinformation site such as the sorely mislabled Catholics for a Free Choice (which is NOT a Catholic group). Notice how there are no references attached to the list? Seems like they don't want anyone researching it on their own.
