<mild rant> I went to a presentation this evening entitled, "The Truth About Club Drugs" by Bob Gordon. Evidently this guy is well known as an "authority" on club drugs and speaks on campuses nationwide. If you see a flyer advertising such a show, do go, but be prepared to leave very, very agitated. He was young, upper 20's or maybe just trying to look it to play to a college crowd. In the span of less than an hour he had actually said that: 1) ecstasy has been seen to contain rat poison(when will the strychnine myths die!), 2) never order an ecstasy testing kit, because then you will be on a government list and they will watch you.(This logic is similar to those who tell the high schoolers to never buy condoms because they should be ashamed of sex and abstinence is the only way...) 3) those testing kits can't detect PMA, DXM or 2-cb(he knows about PMA and 2-CB but isn't aware that DXM and 2-CB are somewhat easy to detect with Marquis and PMA alone will cause no color change?!?, i guess he figured Half the Truth About Club Drugs was good enough), 4) all Mitsubishi pills contain PMA, as well as most "double stacked" 5)with GHB (which he said causes it's sedation through the "release" of large amounts of dopamine!) a teaspoon gets you off, a tablespoon kills you.
Of course he stressed the fact that lye is used along with "Pledge" wood cleaner to make it. Hmmm GBL is in pledge? gee we've all been wasting our money! Even if it were, that is like saying that salt water is made out of concrete cleaning acid(HCl) and drain cleaner(NaOH) 6) "a single dose of ecstasy could cause your body to never produce serotonin again" no comment possible due to intense rage building...
7) DXM "dries you up and stops you from sweating", 8) if you ever see tracers off glow sticks then you took PMA not MDMA. (nah couldn't be MDA or the fact that I've seen tracers off glow sticks since I was 5. In fact most bright luminescent objects give tracers in the dark for many people sober or otherwise) 9) misspelled rohypnol as flunitrazepan instead of ~pam (i know it's small but it was the very first slide he put up and i thought, "oh god this is gonna be long.") 10) started show off with a Huxley quote, from the Doors of Perception then somewhat bashed him for "taking a year off and doing a bunch of drugs like mescaline" I think this anecdote was supposed to be cool and bring in the skeptics but it was very sarcastic and just pissed me off.
12) referred to Prozac and Zoloft as an MAOIs and so it was a dangerous combination with MDMA(i think he is in the wrong business) 11)etc...etc... I started to forget the logical blunders once it got past 10.
And all this was under the guise of "Truth". He even commended himself on not using BS scare tactics. He slammed all internet based drug information as crap and written by made by 12 year olds(as are all illegal drugs according to him). Meanwhile i think he received his "truth" from the fillings in his teeth as they vibrated in tune with the oracle of power residing on Mars(headquarters of NIDA). He constantly pushed that the internet only offered half the truth, but I think maybe he neglected to use the scroll bar on his browser as he missed way more than half of it) I would expect this sort of shite if I were in middle or high-school. But to spew this sort of dangerous misinformation at the college level is insulting and disturbing. I think it was simply a mouthpiece for every bad meme the drug war has produced yet: "strychnine", "drain cleaner in GHB", "lurking in every club is a date raper", "self taught information is wrong, listen to us", "ketamine is just a cat tranquilizer" etc etc....
He actually mentioned the use of MDMA as marriage counseling tool in the eighties then laughed that off, he's obviously been trained in how to lie and make the truth seem absurd through preemptive ridicule. He used images from the recent Time ecstasy article, and from Erowid but maybe he should read the words next time. The auditorium was filled with hundreds of Fraternity guys and Sorority girls as they seemed to be required to attend by the p***ing of sign-in sheets with their respective greek insignias on them. No doubt they believed at least some of it and of course things like rat poison will stay in their minds forever. If a pro-drug rally was conducted with this level of irresponsible misinformation they could be arrested for corruption of the youth or something. But then again this is Texas and math isn't the only kind of "fuzzy" thinking going on here. I apologize for any mistakes or inconsistencies here, put I pieced it together from notes and skipped around quite a bit.
cephalex PS- Bob Gordon if you read this newsgroup to keep up with the latest slang like "Georgia Home Boy" for GHB, then I implore you, how do you sleep at night?

I'm a pretty new G user, when I told a friend what I was doing his jaw dropped. His school had p***ed around flyers claiming that "1 in 10 GHB experiences result in death".
I laughed until it hurt.

While listening to this guy Bob Gordon's sort of nonsense is doubtless infuriating to anyone in posession of real information on the subject, one should perhaps regain some inner calm by remembering that his job is to make a speech to discourage these kids from taking illegal psychoactive drugs. Clearly telling them the truth would not have that effect.
Rather than a direct attack, perhaps you should try and make sure the audience knows how to correctly identify the fallacies and propaganda tricks that he used: Circular logic Ad hominem argument Bandwagon claims False alternatives Genetic fallacy Ad vericundiam (himself!!, sheesh!) and on and on.
Next time you hear that he's going to speak, hand out logic 101 cheat-sheets at the door.

perhaps truth wont scare anyone away, but as soon as the kids find out they have been lied to, they will discount almost all of the establishment line as false, and may try drugs that are in fact bad news.

That is exactly the dilemma that any drug 'education' program will encounter if it should seek to influence its audience towards abstinence. But education that was truthful and judgementally neutral might be viewed as likely to lead to some people learning that it is 'safe' to 'experiment' with some substances, in moderation. Such education is unacceptable to the weilders of power who justify prohibition and user criminalization on the grounds of 'No, Never, BAD BAD BAD'.
Dancesafe might be tolerated at a rave but imagine the outrage if they made their case at a middle school.

That's like the time I ended up at school on 2-CB. An aquantaince of mine said that if you take a 2-CB pill there's a 1 in 3 chance you end up a vedgetable. Hahaha, the funny part is that I had taken 3 the weekend before... A few weeks after that he came to me asking to buy some, I said no, people who believe that aren't responsible enough to be allowed to take drugs, hey, it's for his safety...
