Pity we don't have a collection of a few thousand testimonials proving that these drugs work just fine.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/040914/323/f2l6r.html Tuesday September 14, 07:04 PM US FDA links teen suicide, anti-depressants WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Food and Drug Administration has for the first time linked teen suicide and the use of anti-depressants.
"I think we now all believe there is an increase in suicidal thinking and action that is consistent with all the drugs" examined, said Robert Temple, ***ociate director of the FDA office of medical policy.
Temple spoke late Monday, after a day of hearings with independent experts, which showed the results of clinical trials conducted by pharmaceutical laboratories showed a relationship between some anti-depressants and an increase in suicidal behavior among children and adolescents.
The agency had stopped one of its analysts, Andrew Mosholder, from presenting similar conclusions at a prior meeting on the subject in February.
The FDA explained at the time that his conclusions were premature and that stepped-up results from clinical trials were necessary.
Results from the tests showed that Prozac, an anti-depressant made by Eli Lilly, which is the most commonly prescribed drug for adolescent depression, increased the risk of suicide 1.52 times.
The five anti-depressants in question as a group heightened risk 1.95 times, with Effexor, made by Wyeth, presenting the highest risk.

Findings and conclusions are still premature from a scientific point of view.
A relationship between to entities ( antidepressants - increased suicide rates) have been found. Might be a causative relationship. Therefore more valid clinical trials and scientific studies must be done , other possible causative factors must be investigated and either confirmed or ruled out as the true cause of the increased rates. The possibility of previous lower than factual reportings of suicides must be ruled out to confirm that the change in increased suicide rates are an actual increase and not due to better reporting routines.
Etcetera, etcetera. There are always a big risk of "panic" reactions in the community when dramatic reports of any kind, hits the newsstands.
Sound and healthy analyzes with valid and stable conclusions are always the preferable method before deciding next step of action. In the case of antidepressants and suicide rates the opposite relationship ( higher prescriptionrates - lower suiciderates )is shown to be a true causative relationship amongst adults.
And don??t forget about 30 - 40 % of the suicides are made by untreated or treated with to low doses depressed persons.
Safest and most effective antidepressant treatment are still ECT.

In the Wednesday, 9/15, LA Times: FDA Panels Urge Strong Warnings on Antidepressants By Elizabeth Shogren Times Staff Writer September 15, 2004 BETHESDA, Md. ??” Two Food and Drug Administration advisory committees recommended Tuesday that the agency warn doctors, patients and their families that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thought and behavior among children.
The panels called for placing the warning in a black box on the detailed information that manufacturers provide to physicians. The panels also agreed that packages should be accompanied by warnings for patients and caregivers that medication designed to help severely depressed children could instead endanger their lives.
Of the 23 panel members who voted, 15 urged the black boxes, which are the most prominent warnings that the FDA can require. Drug companies must include them in advertisements for their drugs. Many doctors are reluctant to prescribe medicines with black-box warnings.
The panels ??” whose members include psychiatrists, pediatricians, statisticians and pharmacists ??” stopped short of recommending that the agency ban the drugs for children. Many doctors say the drugs are effective with some patients, and panel members did not want to take away one of the few forms of treatment for a sometimes disabling condition.
"I think the purpose of the black box is to make [doctors] think twice about prescribing the drugs," said Dr. P. Joan Chesney, chairwoman of the FDA's pediatric advisory committee.
"Suicide is a life-threatening complication of major depressive disorder. What the treatment appears to do is to add a 2% to 3% increase in the risk of suicide" for children, she said.
Dr. Wayne K. Goodman, a psychiatrist and chairman of the FDA's psychopharmacologic drugs advisory committee, said, "I'm not ready, given what we know, to ban antidepressants." Tuesday's recommendations were the latest events in a drama that began with emotional pleas from parents that the FDA act against the pills that they believed had caused their children's suicides.
It is up to the FDA to decide whether to accept the panels' advice.
The agency is not obliged to follow the recommendations of its advisory committees, but generally it does.
Dr. Robert Temple, director of the FDA's office of drug evaluation, said the agency would probably move quickly, given the intense public attention on the issue. Some action can be expected within a few months, he said.
In March, the FDA warned doctors, patients and families of the risks of depression among people taking antidepressants, especially in the first weeks on the drugs or after a change in dosage. But the agency did not single out children, nor did it indicate the drugs cause suicidal behavior.
Doctors wrote about 15 million prescriptions for nine antidepressants for children and teenagers last year, according to data from IMS Health, a pharmaceutical information and consulting company, and the FDA. Patients typically receive several prescriptions a year.
The FDA has released no information on the overall number of children taking antidepressants who commit suicide, although experts believe about 15% of people who suffer major depressive disorder ultimately kill themselves.
Fluoxetine hydrochloride, marketed as Prozac by Eli Lilly & Co., is the only antidepressant approved for use in children, because it meets the FDA's standard for showing effectiveness in clinical trials.
But doctors routinely prescribe other antidepressants for young patients, and the FDA doesn't prohibit them from doing so.
Zoloft is the drug most frequently prescribed for children, according to the FDA. Prozac has moved into second place.
The FDA advisory panels were responding to a recent examination by Columbia University and FDA experts of incidents of suicidal thought and behavior in clinical trials of nine relatively new antidepressants, which include most of the drugs currently prescribed.
In addition to Prozac and Zoloft, the other antidepressants that were the focus of the FDA's analysis were Celexa, Effexor, Luvox, Paxil, Remeron, Serzone and Wellbutrin.
Their analysis found that two or three children out of 100 on antidepressants experienced an increased risk of suicidal thought or behavior, compared with young people taking sugar pills, or placebos.
"We have very strong evidence of harm and really not very good evidence of efficacy," said Dr. Thomas Newman, a member of the FDA pediatric advisory committee and a professor at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.
He said doctors should talk to young patients' parents or caregivers about the risks of the drugs before prescribing them. "It would not be that bad if use of these drugs were diminished," he said.
The panels debated whether to exclude some of the nine antidepressants from the warnings, and they also discussed whether to extend the warning to older antidepressants, which are not widely prescribed, or to any drugs that may be developed. They opted to recommend that the FDA direct the warning to all antidepressants.
Sales of antidepressants for all ages rose about 7% in the first six months of this year compared with the first six months of last year, according to the FDA. Adolescents and children have consistently accounted for 7% to 8% of all prescriptions.
The data from the recent trials of antidepressants helped show a stronger connection between the drugs and suicidal behavior in children than in adults.

Take a look at the exact story told by the FDA. There is a Power Point presentation or a text presentation; see here: text: http://google.fda.gov/search?q=cache:MqhVzwvjjSo:http://www.fda.gov/o... power point: www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/04/slides/4006S1_03_Shaffer.ppt r

see again the http://google.fda.gov/search?q=cache:MqhVzwvjjSo:http://www.fda.gov/o... It is particularly interesting to see that the rate of suicides since 1900 1900, suicides about 8 % of the males aged 15-24. Now it is decreasing to 18 since 1995, after a pike to 23.
More interesting: girls suicides decreased more o r less regularly since 1900, though their was a lowest at 2 point near 1955.
It's clear that drug abuse and alcohol increase enormously the risk.

and this (same reference as above) SUICIDALITY DURING THE TREATMENT OF TEEN DEPRESSION Cautions & Considerations -3 ?§After increasing for 35 years teen suicide rates have been declining consistently in many countries.
?§During this period there has been a marked increase in exposure of teens to SSRI antidepressants.
?§These trends could be related. We do not - currently - have a better explanation for the turnabout of a condition that led to the death of tens of thousands of young people.

US studies links teen suicide to antidepressants.
Olfson M,et al. Relationship between antidepressant medication treatment and suicide in adoloscents.
Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2003;60(10):978-82 Investigators mapped prescription patterns on antidepressants to adolescents during a period of one month in 588 different zipareacodes 1989 and 1999( 86% of US population). Those areas that showed the highest suicide rates at start also showed the highest prescriptaion rates. The prescription rates was understood as a consequence of the high suicide rates , not the reverse. The average number of precriptions to adolescents had doubled from -89 - 99. The increased prescription rate was clearly positivly correlated to the decrease in suicide rates during the to 5 year periods preceding the two registrations -89 and 99.
In total 1% increased prescription rate led to 0,23 decrease in sucide rates / 100 000 teenagers. The decrease incorporated shootings as well as other methods. The decrease was signifiquant in groups with the highest suicide rates ; older teenagers, boys and teenagers from families with low incomes.
The effect on impulsive agressional behaviour with SSRI was proposed to be further investigated. This kind of behaviour are especially common amongst boys with a clinical depression and can lead to an increase risk of suicide. Drug and alcohol use as risc factors and psychotherapy as protective factor could not be mapped or investigated. Nor could the underlying diagnose that lead to prescription of antidepressant be established in this study.

Dave Rice finds suicide funny and rape, and wrongful incarceration, and...and...
Dave Rice posted recently with ID Rev. Desertphile that terrorism isn't the enemy. That is probably what Al Queda is saying too.
In May, 2004, his twin brother Frederic Rice posted a drawing of the floor plan to the not-so-secret-any-more Rice deprogramming center located in the Mojave Desert, and his twin David cheered that I should be not told where the "documents" are being hidden. Note that "deprogramming" is depersonalization and a violation of international human rights.
Here some details what kind of crimes the Rice brothers, who both stole the name de Rothschild, plan to commit against religious people in their hideouts: 1) Handsome porch to lure unsuspecting victims into a false sense of comfort and security.
2) Bedroom, used to have forced sex with the deprogrammee. Video taping equipment is in here; proceeds of the sale of the video go to fight Scientology Inc.
3) Brainwashing Center, large TV with lecture tapes on why religion is evil, hosted by James Randi, Karl Marx, Joseph Lennin, Charles Darwin, and Frederic Rice. (They forgot to mention Hitler and a battery of psychs.) 4) Long hallway to sex/video room.
5) Dark windowless closet to lock up uncooperating deprogramees (They forgot to mention that it will be a torture chamber).
6) Guarded room, manned 24 hours a day.
7) Staff kitchen, deprogrammees are not allowed to eat.
8) Bare room with hard cement flooring. This is where deprogrammees get only one hour sleep each day, laying in a dirt sheet. Note the tiny window to prevent escape. (This sort of confirms that the Rice bro's were something like concentration camp wardens in their past life) 9) Deprogrammer house. Used to hide our victims from family, friends, and churches until our victims no longer believe in their religion.
Walls are 12 inch brick, to hide screaming of deprogrammees from neighbors.
http://www.skeptictank.org/depro.jpg They want to build that crime center and concentration camp in the Mojave Desert, and I ***ume they will also bury the beheaded or starved to death or raped to death victims in their backyard.
Below is copied from a PDF file of the www.religiousfreedomwatch.org, the extemist page 10 of David Touretzy, the bomb and porn instruction guy: Robert Clark was arrested in 1990 for hacking into Los Alamos National Laboratory and has posted bomb threats on the internet.
Zenon Panoussis is hosting websites containing bomb-making instructions and was a member of the Anti-Olympic Committee which supported bombings to sabotage the 2004 Olympics. He was arrested in 1999 for verbally ***aulting a police officer.
David Rice suggested in a posting to kill members of the FBI.
Frederic Rice has threatened governmental officials over the Internet.
He also hosts a site where he gives tips on how to kill bikers.
Andreas Heldal-Lund hosts a website with a message board that contains death threats.
Arnie Lerma is a supporter of the Neo Nazis movement founded by Willis Carto and is on the Board of Policy of Liberty Lobby, an anti-semitic organization founded by Carto. He is also ***ociated with the Utopian Anarchist Party, that promotes the overthrowing of the U.S.
government, the killing of police officers and their website teaches how to build bombs. Lerma is close to William White, spokesperson of UAP who was arrested and convicted of battery and carrying a concealed weapons.
also copied from the www.religiousfreedomwatch.org DAVID RICE David Rice has done more than talk about harming the Church of Scientology and its parishioners. He has actively sought the means to conduct terrorism.
GPS Readings Taken by David Rice & Keith Henson On July 5, 2000, David Rice was at one of the Church facilities with Keith Henson and Barbara Graham. It was on that day that Rice took the GPS (Global Positioning System) readings of various buildings. Rice later posted this information on the Internet along with a photo and the coordinates of one of the buildings. He called it "target data".
In his November 2000 Affidavit, Rice gives his false version of the story on what "happened" on that day when he, Barbara Graham and Keith Henson were har***ing the Church. Rice claims that he used the GPS device to simulate that it was a tape recorder.
If that was his real intention, then why did he take the actual readings? In any event, Rice's story is contradicted by a debrief written by Barbara Graham (a.k.a. Barb Warr) who clearly states that Rice was taking GPS coordinates and that Keith Henson had them go out again to repeat this action after a lunch break.
With his false affidavit David Rice was apparently attempting to protect Keith Henson who had also made threats against the Church. It is not the first time that Rice attempted to cover up threats against the Church while blaming the Church for having fabricated the threat.
In July 1999, Rice blamed the Church of Scientology for a bomb threat that had been made against it several years earlier. Robert Clark, another avid attacker of the Church, and the person who had actually made the threat, posted to the Internet the following day that he (Rob Clark) had been the one who made the bomb threat. Of course Clark was dishonest enough to only admit his terrorist threat after the statute of limitations ran out.
David Rice claims to be a computer network systems specialist who used to live on his "own" boat, Myste, at Dana Point, California. On October 23, 2000 he posted on the Internet that he had sold the boat and was now in Hana Bay, Maui - one of the Hawaiian islands.
In a November 2000 affidavit, which was posted on the Internet, Rice confirmed that he has been out of the country and that he was at that time planning to move on to French Polynesia.
His desire to remain outside United States' legal jurisdiction is understandable.
