Well, it's hard to believe, but my kids have been away at summer camp for two full weeks. The house is so quiet it's almost creepy.  The first couple of days I kept thinking I needed to pick them up from school or someplace. I just had this creepy feeling that I was forgetting them. But nope, they're at camp.
I've had 2 letters from my daughter, one from my son. His was 3 lines long. It was like that Alan Sherman song, Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda. Remember that? I'm going to treasure these letters forever. They go right into the 'bribe box'.
You know, the box that you swear you're going to show to your kid's fiance unless they pay you the big bucks. :-) I miss them, but the ease of life without kids is amazing.
No cooking, little cleaning, and the lack of constant garbage....it's amazing. The kitchen floor stays completely clean and it doesn't get sticky. I haven't misplaced the remote once. I can use the computer whenever I want. And the cat loves me again. But I don't know if I can take 2 more weeks. That's a LONG time.

I have a question.
In Aus, these kinds of camps are not common.......I remember watching lots of movies as a kid and wishing desperately I lived in the US!!!!  (anyone remember Little Darlings with Tatum O'Neil?) Do most kids go away to these camps?  How long do they generally go for?
And what age?
Sorry for the questions...but I'm curious Kerry ...

I cannot answer your question with real data, only anecdotal data.  There are many summer camps.  Many of them are not the kind you stay at over night but are day camps where kids attend for a week or two.  A number of those are affiliated with churches, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, the Y, and similar organizations.  I went to them two different years as a kid in the 1960's.  I know several co-workers who send their middle school kids to them because they are helpful in the day care dept., so to speak, when one is a working parent.  As to overnight camps, those are very expensive, which immediately limits use to those who can afford it.  I've known very few people who either went or sent their kids to overnight camps.

When I was a kid, my brother and I went to sleep-away camp every summer.  It was a YMCA camp, and we were gone for a week.  I have no idea what the cost was then, but it's very expensive now.
When my son was young, he went to camp a few times.  My aunt was affiliated with a church camp, so he went for a 4 day sleep over camp, and he went to "Asthma camp" (special camp for kids diagnosed with asthma) two summers, for 4 days each.  Most camps my son went to had some kind of financial ***istance available for families that couldn't afford the full cost, so that helped us a lot.
He went to lots of day camps at the YMCA, but we needed financial aid for those, and he belonged to a Youth For Christ group that had lots of day camps and trips to places like Amusement parks.
I was lucky to have an ex that was willing to shell out additional monies when my son needed it, to go to these activities :)

When I was a kid, my father wanted to find something that he and I could do together, so he convinced me that BoiScouts (tm) would be fun.
He got involved, too, and we went on many weekend camping trips with scouts.  I remember mostly freezing my butt off.
Then, one summer, they sent me to a 2 week camping trip to (if memory serves) Camp High Sierra.
Oh, how I longed for simply freezing my butt off again!
These folks were merciless!  They considered an all day hike in the mountains (23 miles each way) to be fun (I have always hated walking, and a forced march like this sorta reminded me of the Death March during WWII).
I do remember, though, that my father didn't manage to make it to this little fun trip.  Instead, he and my brothers and sister got to stay home and watch TV.
Now, there is another type of camp that seems popular for kids, here.
It is sometimes called Boot Camp.
They are set up for kids who march to a different drummer .... and they are designed to get the kids to march to society's drummer.
Their methods are harsh.  They yell at the kids a lot, they make them do all sorts of difficult (and often pointless) things.
I think that they got the idea for Boot Camps from Camp High Sierra and the Baton Death March.

Depends on where you are, the parents' income level, and what camps are available that the parents can afford.  When I was growing up, I only got to go to camp 2 or 3 summers.  It was a one-week church camp.  Lil Sis and I rotated the summers we went, 1) because Mamma needed at least one of us home to help with the garden and with Baby Sis and Lil Brother, and 2) because Mom couldn't afford to send both of us, even though it wasn't nearly as expensive as the summer camps I keep reading about.
Last year, OS went for 1 week of Boy Scout camp, YD did 1 week of evenings at Girl Scout Twilight Camp, and YS didn't get to go to camp at all because he has to go to his father's for 8 weeks during the summer and his father won't send him to camp during that time. :-(

I had all that, too, there on the farm.  But I also had to help take care of Baby Sis and Lil Brother, help in the garden, etc.  That one week at church camp was a nice vacation.

remember watching lots This is a definate "it depends" question. We're Jewish, and for Jewish kids, yes it is EXTREMELY common to attend summer camp for at least a month, if not two. Study after study have shown that if you want your child to remain actively Jewish throught life, Jewish summer camps are THE way to go about it, so they're very popular and really hard to get into. How hard? Well, we applied in SEPTEMBER for the following summer and weren't sure we would make the cutoff.
:-) If you live on the east coast, summer camps are much more prevalent than the west coast. New Yorkers tend to send their kids to camp more than people further south. Many of the camps are in Maine and the Berkshires, and those camps are almost always filled to the brim.
Hope this helps, Marjorie ...

Don't have kids like that here.(Canada) You can send a kid away for about 6 days for overnight camps.Or day camps are popular here.Great too for a working parent. I just applied for my kids to go to day camps.(aplied for sponsership  to pay as I can't afford it) I used to go away to camp one week a summer.I loved it but never seemed long enough to me.I'm sure not to my mom-n-dad too :0) Today I spent the day at the wading pool with the kids. But just found out they don't offer any programs anymore there. But I told the lifeguard if he can provide supplies I would provide my time.Maybe something to do during the day will help motivate me more.Keep my spirits up a bit.
