Sick story just on the news.
Two teens in a boat on a river here in Michigan see a pair of eagles in a tree.
One teen grabs a .22 rifle and shoots an eagle, the other boy then grabs the gun and shoots the other eagle.
They then retrieve the birds and are caught while using a hatchet to dismember them.

Not to suggest you did anything else other than exhibit a lack of judgement that one time but, of course, if it had hit someone you would have been charged with criminal negligence or involuntary manslaughter (if someone had died as a result) and you would have been subject the provisions of your state's criminal code.

That reminds me of Old China (19th century) where under a collective Confucian system the relatives of a criminal were handed over for strangulation. However, even there I doubt the killing of wildlife would have pinned the blame on an extended group.
In the US, even though we could probably see a parental role in the teaching or non-teaching of values, only the individual(s) actually commiting the crime is liable for prosecution for criminal activities.

I did not myself perform that paraphrase of Longfellow. I intended the line to point out the utter irresponsibility of shooting at anything up in a tree, at any time, by anyone not at war.
Longfellow's poem made me shudder when I was a kid. It could as well have been the arrow in the heart of his friend: Arrow and Song I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air, It fell to earth, 1 knew not where; For who has sight so keen and strong, That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

In some states here in Old China USA, parents of children ARE legally responsible for the acts of their under-aged children, and CAN be prosecuted.
In an age where accountability seems to be utterly lost in favor of political correctness, or some bleeding-heart mentality, many folks believe NO one is responsible for such acts, or responsible for ANY of their actions, and many would blame the gun. Right...

My question is where did these teens get a 22? Do their parents think it's OK to leave a gun where a teenager could get it?
Are eagles no longer extent?
Jerry Avins j...@ieee.org
Frieda, The question you should be asking is the same one that should have been asked about me: where did they get the bullets?
My parents wouldn't even let me keep a cap gun, so I built a rifle and a pair of pistols. All worked. All were rifled at the same time with the same tool (which I also built), and the local police expert couldn't tell which barrel a bullet had been fired from. (When I showed him how to fire .32 caliber bullseyes from his service .38 and leave no rifling marks at all, he opined that it was good we were "on the same side".) I was not quite 11 when I started designing my guns, and began to build them a few months after my birthday. By 13 I had completed them all, but the rifle had been serviceable (though incomplete) for the better part of a year.

1. Probably from their parents. Actually, with proper training, and upbringing, both of which are clearly absent here, I see no reason why a teenager shouldn't have access to a gun... I sure did. In fact, I was shooting a .22 when I was 4...
2. Yes, they are mostly non-extent. Only Ivory-Billed Eagles are extent.

I made sure my kids didn't see guns as forbidden fruit, but as a thing whose use required care and responsibility. I succeeded in the first part at least. I'm the only gun owner in the family.

Thanks Sue for the follow up.
I've had people mention it to me all day and I was wondering if any further info had come out.
One thing good or bad depending on how it works for the individual is that in Michigan age 17 is an adult.
A 17 yr. old in this state goes to jail and it is much easier then to prosecute a 16 yr. old as an adult.

But the prosecution would probably not be for the direct act of the child.
For instance, if the child obtained a weapon not secured properly inside the home, perhaps the parents could be prosecuted for that. And perhaps a civil action could be brought by the victim's family (alas, not in this case as they were eagles) against the parents for some kind of negligence.
It seems like more and more people crowding into natural areas and armed with all kinds of devices will vastly increase the number of incidents.
