Yes!  I suffer from horrible nausea and vomiting.  I've also had an ulcer in the past from the NSAIDs.  I now take Protonix and Phenegran daily.

Yes!  I think as more respond, we'll see that it is very common.
For example, even tho' aspirin, advil, motrin are very effective, I cannot take them any more.  Just one or two and I'm in agony.
So far, vioxx has been a life saver. Others can't take it.
I do think that inflammation of the digestive tract is as much a part of lupus and inflammation of other soft tissue.  My doc agrees.
I am much better since I eliminated ALL milk products from my diet.
YMMV.
Good luck on finding something that works without making you feel worse.  At least we have quite a number of options med-wise.

Maybe you'd like to share what stomach problems are bothering you, and folks could be more specific in helping you.  Here is my list: I have problems with my esophagus. Reflux (heartburn and food coming part way up), but also trouble swallowing because my esphagus doesn't work right.  My rheumy tells me it is lupus causing the problems.  I take Nexium twice a day, and Diltiazem for high blood pressure but it's supposed to help smooth muscle spasms, too.  I also can't take anti-inflammatories (Bextra, Celebrex...) for more than a few weeks.
Irritable bowel syndrome is another problem, but I don't take anything for that.

I have severe esophageal, stomach, and GI problems ***ociated with auto immune disease. It is very difficult to deal with at times then settles down for a while, then comes back for a sneak attack, just when you think things are going pretty well. Vioxx tore my stomach to bits - but Mobic has been wonderful.
No cheese?  ArrrgggH - the mere thouight msakes me cringe<g>.
I've noticed, though, that too many eggs and "real" (not non-fat) cream seem to trigger the IBS.

"janers" rojak...@bright.net

Ah the stomach problems.   I don't know where to begin, except to say "OH YES".   Mine has been going on for years starting with IBS (irritable bowel) and the good old bathroom "runs".
then came the stomach, with the GERD.  Put on all kinds of medications but then the nice meds like prilosec, nexium and those kinds were not on the market.  Just the lovely zantac and well I even was on Propulsid.  One drug they took off the market which causes heart problems...DUH guess who has them?
The GERD went into Achalasia, which is hard to diagnose.  So please don't let them doctors tell you the pain in your tum tum is all in your head.  IT IS NOT, and you need to definately get a good GI doc to hand these problems.  Get some tests done to determine what is wrong and hope to treat is accordingly.
Wende is right.  it comes and goes.  MORE coming then going?  Right Wende?

I've only had success with drugs that treat the symptoms.  The most effective for the colon spasms has been bentyl... but it makes me very drowsy and "out of it." As far as meds to treat lupus causing stomach problems - yep, that too but very mild for the most part.  The worst drug for my gut was Naproxen and similar NSAIDs.  These were also very hard on my liver.
Plaquenil does cause mild nausea for me if I don't take it with food (or in my case, Ensure.) The COX-II inhibitors are supposed to be easier on the stomach but I've heard otherwise and they have other side effects. OTOH, i've also heard those who can tolerate these drugs (Celebrex comes to mind) get a lot of relief from them.

I have had many gastric and peptic ulcers from the nsaids I took with lupus.... now am just on chloroquin and prednisone without any big problems.... found the combo of nsaids and antibiotics to be bad too.

Hi Mike and Kathy, I will join the chorus here by saying that I have a lot of stomach problems too. It is much better now that my lupus is more stable. I have poor esophageal motility, nausea, and bowel problems. I also suffer from heartburn a lot. My GI says that it is lupus related. It is hard to keep weight on even when I am on prednisone.

I will join in the yay sayers and say I have my fair share of stomach problems. At this point the working diagnosis is onset of lupus but nothing is confirmed, so my problems could be coming from elsewhere - Fibromyalgia or Chron's Disease. I am being tested for Chron's in July - yaayyy - I've always wanted a good colon cleansing... not really. Anyone have any words of wisdom on the wonders of colonoscopies?
Thanks!
Steph ...

REP r...@inanna.com

They're very very painful. I've had two, and both missed my Crohn's -
because mine is in my small intestine. I do have spastic colon as well (some call it IBS, but I'm old) and that makes sigmos and colonoscopies especially painful. I don't have any stomach problems - just intestine.

Drink lots of water, You want to be careful about dehydration.
have someone there to pick you up.
Maybe have someone there while you're at home doing the prep (day before and morning). (maybe even the day after, because I felt very "faint" the day after, then the next day I was back to normal (as one can be).
Ask which meds you are and aren't allowed to do the day before or the day of.
I was up and down (with sleep).  Pad on the mattress for accidentals?
Ask when the report will be available and if it has to picked up or will be sent to you or forwarded to another doctor?
Does that help?
Hugs J

The anticipation is worse than the procedure.  The prep liquids are horrible, and I do mean horrible.  It is like drinking a gallon of sea water - very salty.  It anyone tells you to mix it with Sprite -
don't!    However,  there are new pills out that do the same thing.
However, they are expensive and you have to ask for them.
You should be able to have it done out patient.  They will put an IV in your hand, and give you a sedative.  After you get into the OR, they'll give you something else and when you are once again coherent it is done.  Recovery was no big deal, slept the afternoon and went back to work the next day.
I received my preliminary results same day, and the confirmed results on the biopsy's within a week.  (I had the test done for possible cancer, not Chron's) Good luck.   On Tue, 3 Jun 2003 23:14:31 -0400, "Stephanie Townsend"

Buy some extra soft toilet paper for the night before, preferably one with lotion. Keep a jar or whatever of Vaseline handy to apply to your sore butt, after you drink the go lytely or colytely that you have to drink a gallon of the evening before the test. Plan on spending some "quality time in the bathroom the evening before the test. Reading material is good.  You may or may not depends on the doctor have a clear liquid diet the day and evening before the test. No red jello. You can watch the procedure if you are awake enough. Otherwise you probably won't "remember a thing". Only take a few minutes. Good luck. I hope everything "goes" well. Pun intended. Welcome to our merry band. Wende ...

Hi Steph!
I've never had to have one, but have taken 3 people to them.  Most recently, my neighbor-this past Monday.  I wanted to tell you about the pills she took.  They were just 15.00, but she had to take 25 all toll!!!  15 the day before & 10 the morning of.  She refused to drink the Go-Lightly. LOL!  She took 3 pills every 15 minutes, with 8oz. of water, until 15 were taken & repeated that the next morning with the other 10.  They are monster pills though-at least to me. :-) They would compare with Centrum vitamins in size.   Good luck to you.  I hope your colonoscopy turns out fine.

Thanks for all the support! I am not worried too much - just about the prep.
I am such a baby when it comes to drinking things that taste horrible. I nearly "died" during an Upper GI Series when I had to swallow all the barium. So, I may definitely consider the pills. I swallow 11 pills a day anyway - what's 15 more! The rest should be fine - my doc promises to make me feel "very happy and high" as he puts it. Last time they did that I got the giggles and babbled excessively about who knows what. Hopefully, I am QUIET happy, high person this time around. :-) Steph ...

Same here!  Mostly heartburn & some IBS when I give in & buy my Honey Combs.  Dairy products are the culprits for me too, but I haven't been brave enough to eliminate them completely.  I take Zantac, but it's not exactly keeping up with the damage from my Daypro.
