Though efforts were already underway to help curb what many say is a growing problem in the two affluent suburban towns, plans have been kicked up a notch following the incident at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. Police focusing on teen drinkingPolice focusing on teen drinking Combating underage drinking in the Bergen County community of about 25,000 is a different battle than fighting the problem in the suburbs. Rather than busting beer keg parties held at the homes of permissive parents, where hundreds of teenagers might gather, Garfield authorities have focused on venues and restaurants they say have made it easier for minors to get alcohol. Earlier in the year, patrolmen had spotted disorderly behavior among minors leaving a teen party at Dimi's Restaurant and Night Club on River Drive, Andrezzi said. Although ...

Teen drinkingTeen drinking Our village desires to provide a healthy, safe and enjoyable environment free from illegal drinking for our youth under the age of 21. Underage drinking is a significant problem affecting youth around this country, and parents who provide alcohol to minors are placing our youth at risk. The Board of Trustees of the Village of Hawthorn Woods unanimously passed a resolution expressing support of a bill recently introduced to the Illinois Senate to make the laws tougher for anyone found guilty of providing alcohol to youth.

A recent survey commissioned by The Century Council, a national non-profit dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, revealed that 65 percent of underage youth say they get alcohol from family and friends, meaning they get it from their parents, their friends' parents, older siblings or friends, with or without their permission. Most troubling, some parents have become willing accomplices in planning teen parties and turning a blind eye to alcohol use in their own homes.

IS THIS THE ANSWERIS THIS THE ANSWER? I'm a youth worker. I love working with youth. They are troubled sometimes. They are carefree sometimes. They sometimes experiment where they shouldn't and sometimes they choose not to. Sometimes they stand firm for what it right and sometimes they make choices that bring harm to themselves and to others. I see great potential in every one of them. I want them to survive their teenage years to find that potential for themselves. Surviving for some means doing something about teen drinking and specifically teen ...
