Millions of men victimized by child support fraud

(24 Messages)

Seems that in the rush to prosecute men -- and men alone -- for being bad parents, a lot of innocent men have been caught in the dragnet. The NFJA, a men's rights organization, claims that 1-3 million men nationwide are victims of child-support fraud, which occurs when women falsely identify them as fathers. The article quotes a 1998 Los Angeles Times report on child support as saying, "No one knows how many men are wrongfully pursued for child support, though the district attorney's own re ...

FUTILITY OF ANTI-ABORTION LAWS

(23 Messages)

Ms. did a recent retrospective. They showed a photo of a woman who had died in an illegal abortion. That shows why laws against abortion are ultimately futile: if a woman gets killed in a botched operation or commits suicide out of despair, the unborn dies with her. Thus, the law kills the woman w/out saving her child. However, I do believe that carrying a problem pregnancy to term ought to be encouraged although it can't be forced. This has led some to call me "as pro-choice as Randall Ter ...

Safety in Relationships

(25 Messages)

Here I go again. This is a topic that my husband just doesn't seem to understand. I have tried countless times, explaining what it takes for me to feel safe in this relationship and he seems to find flaws with it. I have told him what makes me feel unsafe and he finds flaws with that too. For some reason it isn't making sense to him. Either I'm not explaining it in a way that he understands or he is manipulating me. I am very curious as to what men and women in this newsgroup define as safety wi ...

Trying to get pregnant-tips needed

(25 Messages)

Hi, I'm 34, and never have had a baby before. How do you know for sure when you're ovulating? Do I really have to buy one of those test kits? How long does it normally take? Theresa -- --- Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down.

ReCAPP Theories amp Approaches Youth DevelopmentReCAPP: Theories & Approaches: Youth Development In the past, we have relied on families and communities to meet these needs, but surveys and other research have revealed that astonishingly few young people feel the combination of internal and external support that prepares them for adulthood. For example, the Search Institute has conducted surveys of high school students in 900 communities across the country, ranging from affluent suburbs to low-income neighborhoods. The surveys attempt to measure the number of "developmental assets" among young people in each community – such as connections to adults, feeling valued ...

A lack of developmental assets has been linked to a number of risk factors: higher use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, early sexual activity, violence, and problems in school. The good news is that a higher number of assets serves as a protective buffer. The more assets young people have, the more likely they are to succeed in school, help others, value diversity, maintain good health, demonstrate leadership, resist danger, delay gratification, and persevere in times of adversity. 4

Youth and HIVAIDS Can We Avoid Catastrophe Population ReportsYouth and HIV/AIDS: Can We Avoid Catastrophe?, Population Reports The overwhelming majority of children with HIV were infected from their mothers, during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is now a high priority of HIV/AIDS programs. Without treatment, rates of transmission from mother to infant are between 15% and 20%, according to European and US studies. Breastfeeding can lead to an additional 10% to 20% risk of HIV transmission, based on studies in Africa (415).

Recent studies, however, suggest that infants who are exclusively breastfed up to three months might have less risk of getting HIV from their mothers than those who receive other fluids and foods in addition to breast milk (428, 438). One explanation is that the immune factors of breast milk protect infants from HIV but that contaminants in other fluids and foods counteract this benefit by damaging the infant's stomach (428). If confirmed by further research, these studies suggest that exclusive breastfeeding up to three ...

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Further Reading Linking Youth DevelopmentTeen Pregnancy Prevention: Further Reading - Linking Youth Development This 1997 review of teen pregnancy prevention research shows that prevention programs that adequately address the many and complex reasons that teens become pregnant show the most promise for significantly reducing teen pregnancy and birth rates. The reasons for teen pregnancy may vary from community to community but can include lack of knowledge or skills to avoid sex or use contraception, lack of motivation to avoid early childbearing, relationships between teen girls and older males, sexual abuse, poor performance in school, family ...

The Responsible Education About Life Act formerly the Family LifeThe Responsible Education About Life Act, formerly the Family Life No dedicated federal funding currently exists for comprehensive sex education in schools. In other words, there is no federal appropriation specifically for comprehensive sex education. From 1996 through federal fiscal year 2007, Congress committed more than $1.4 billion dollars (through both federal and state matching funds) to abstinence-only-until-marriage programs;[ 1 ] meanwhile, zero dollars went to comprehensive sex education.

Programs receiving federal abstinence-only monies through these three funding streams are prohibited from discussing the health benefits of contraceptives and condoms. Moreover, Congress continues to fund such abstinence-only programs, despite research that shows that programs teaching abstinence plus contraception are far more effective than abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.[ 2,3,4,5,6 ] It is time for a more balanced approach.

Getting real about sex educationGetting real about sex education In his Aug. 3 Outlook column, "Our 2007 space odyssey is mockery, amusement," Charles Krauthammer defended drunk astronauts by saying that liftoff is very treacherous and that demanding work comes only after their spaceflights are well under way. Then what are all those wall-to-wall gauges and indicators in the cabin for? Astronauts must communicate vital information just before liftoff and decide within seconds after ignition whether to eject their capsule or not.

Hospice volunteers help others bravely face deathHospice volunteers help others bravely face death For more than 30 years Hospice of the Conejo has brought together a team of people dedicated to providing compassion and support to patients with lifelimiting illnesses and their families. A volunteer who is a professional pianist will bring a keyboard to clients and play selections chosen especially to help them be more comfortable and control pain.

Let39s Talk About Sex MaybeLet's Talk About Sex, Maybe? Or maybe not… if you are a Texas student learning about [not-so-] sexual education. And just in case you are one who has not recently experienced sex ed. in Texas , it currently has as much information about sex in it as Texas Law allows for it – so basically very little. In fact, most students could say that their teachers were ones that would stumble out of shock when coming across the rare word “s-e-x”. As mentioned earlier, the reason for this is that Texas law prohibits much talk about sex and protection of sex using condoms or contraception. The law, the Texas Education ...

California Financial Privacy Law Partially Invalidated A FragileCalifornia Financial Privacy Law Partially Invalidated. A Fragile This call was typical of the many we get from teenagers, whispering from their parents' homes, confiding their blossoming sexual feelings and concerns. Our Hotline also receives calls from married men who phone from their offices, worried about extramarital sexual encounters; gay men suffering side effects from medications; mothers caring for a sick child or grieving for one lost to AIDS; even health care professionals themselves confused and requiring burnout support.

At 11:15 a.m. I take a call from a woman who is breathing heavily. She says that four months earlier she'd had a brief affair with a limousine driver, "not out of passion, but because I felt lonely. This was so totally unlike me," she continues. "I come from a traditional Orthodox Jewish family..." Although they used condoms, and she has since tested negative for HIV, she feels deeply ashamed, and has stopped seeing him. And because she has both a persistent vaginal yeast infection and a rash on her neck, she's convinced she must be infected by HIV.

QuotesQuotes Quotes These are quotes that I have collected for the past few years. Whenever I came across one that I liked (or didn’t like but made me think), I wrote it here. It’s now taken on a life of its own because it has become so huge. But I think you’ll find there’s a lot of wisdom here.
