Hi. I work with a high-risk youth program. My piece is to provide recreational opportunities. We do hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, etc. We are trying to incorporate kayaking into the program, but the cost is prohibitive. Does anyone have an old kayak, skirt, paddle, or PFD they might be willing to donate. I can provide a non-profit receipt for actual value to use as a tax deduction.
Thanks for the consideration, Steve Christensen

You might also want to contact the Chattanooga Whitewater Kids Club which is in Chatt, TN....they work with troubled and low income youth....they get deals from Dagger and the city helps support the program through their Parks and Recreation....they have a great thing going.

There are also Whitewater Kids Clubs in Asheville, Bryson City, Charlotte, and Robbinsville, NC, Columbia, SC, and Chattanooga, TN.  These are sponsored by the Nantahala Racing Club. See http://www.nrcrhinos.com/KidsClub.htm . Bank of America deserves kudos as well for sponsoring.  As one involved with the Columbia Club, I can tell you these are great programs for the kids.  Check with the outfitters in your area.  We had great support from The River Runner and Adventure Carolina for boats, gear, time, instructors, boat trailers, etc. The City of Columbia provides personnel for the program also. It is really great fun to teach a 10 year old to roll a kayak and realize when you are dealing with underprivileged kids, when you are frantically yelling at them to grab the stern of your boat as you drift down the river, that they have no idea what you are talking about.

i don't have suggestions but will echo Parkin! I took our kayaks over to  the camp pond last summer when we were running a camp for kids whose moms are in prison..........They *******loved******* getting in the kayaks - for some it was the highlight of their week. I think they enjoyed the freedom and indepence of the kayaks - freedom was a big issue for these kids. (They were elementary age -
younger than the group you are looking to work with i think) the other really popular item were the donated "bug cages".........they were fascinated with caging bugs and then caring for them.........
we are looking to add to our kayak collection also - i keep a few of boats that aren't in current use over at camp for these type programs.......

Does anyone know of similar programs based in the Atlanta/North Georgia area in which I could get involved? I already work with at-risk kids, but something like this would be make for some interesting weekends...

There are orgs. (I happen to volunteer for one in Ca.) that take youth-at-risk on rafting trips. I don't know where you are, but you might want to call Environmental Traveling Companions (415-474-7662) in San Francisco and talk to them. They may either be able to help you get your group on a trip if you're in Ca, or perhaps know one of the similar groups that exist in other parts of the country.

If you get an answer let me know what you find out.  I teach and have taught at a psycho ed center and now teach at a low income school.  I would be glad to give a weekend or two.

I live in Virginia and would be really interested in similar programs anywhere nearby.  When I'm not kayaking, I double as a social work student...
