We've all heard about the claimed "dumbing down" of the ARS. I think the ARRL took a bold step when they began putting together their continuing education training cl***es. Now I'm curious... Who is taking them?
If you have taken one or more of their cl***es, please tell me which one and why. Were they of high quality?
If you haven't taken one, I'd like to know the why of that as well.
Jerky responders will be ignored.
I'll start first.
I haven't taken a single one, but I'm interested in the antenna modelling course.
Why haven't I taken it?
I just don't want to commit the time. I'm still on dial-up and dial-up is a PITA.

I haven't been duboisu that it would be worthwhile esp considering how tech do not seem to be focus at the ARRL
hot-ham-and-che ...@hotmail.com
I dunno. I did subscribe to QEX years ago and it was plenty technical for me. Too bad they removed that sort of thing from QST. Perhaps if they can have their annual "nostalgia" issue, they can put out killer "technical" issue each year?
What do you think?
But there are other courses, such as the emcomm series, the antenna modelling that I mentioned, etc. I'll post a list. Hey, there's one I hadn't seen before: RFI.
bb Available Courses Sample Course Level 1 AREC (EC-001) Level 2 AREC (EC-002) Level 3 AREC (EC-003) Antenna Modeling (EC-004) HF Digital Comm (EC-005) RFI (EC-006) Beyond Repeaters (EC-008) Antenna Design & Construction (EC-009) Technician License Course (EC-010) Radio Frequency Propagation (EC-011) Analog Electronics (EC-012) Digital Electronics (EC-013)

"Claimed dumbing down"?
its not a claim. I still have my old test materials from 1992 and I compared those with the latest test pool questions and also some test pool questions found in some old VE materials dating from the 1970's. there is no "claimed" about it. its a definite and provable TREND.

And if they eliminate the code and change the current testing pools, it'll be dumbed down again.

N7ZZT - Eric Oyen Wrote: When my then 13 yr old daughter took her Tech test last summer I almost cried. She was whining about how hard it was. So I had her bring up a practice exam on one of the popular web sites. Just using the basic statistical idioms of multiple choice tests (which letters are most used in which portion of a test) and without being asked or seeing a single question, I scored an 88. My daughter stopped whining and p***ed her exam 2 days later. The odds of probability would have had me scoring between 45 to 60, using the method I chose, and I have crummy luck.
And just for the record, Yes I am a no-code Tech, For thirteen years I have struggled to learn itand never got anywhere further than 3 and 4 day long migraine headaches, but I'm half german and the rest is irish... I'll fight with it until I win or it's filtering the finest irish whisky on my grave. As for the fate of the code? As easy as it would be for me to see it go away, it belongs here. If there HAS to be a change, bring BACK the FOUR License cl***es and perhaps make 10 meters a training ground, giving the nocoders contact with HF with rigs that are within reasonable price ranges for learners. They would have access to ssb as well. Bear in mind I am not proposing that the band simply be handed over, this is where the additional cl*** would come in.
There is no question that the priveledge has to be earned, and I am not suggesting a tech plus type thing. Take the exams for Tech from the early ninties, set up study material but no question pool. Make them prove they have learned what the answers they multiple guessed mean, this will sort out the casual radio fan from a true ham. Now there is a very specific reason I chose 10 meters. There are all mode ten meter rigs available all over and for about the cost of a reasonable HT, as opposed to the higher expense of all mode rigs, in 6 meters and up. Not to mention, there are inexpensive, relatively inconspicuious antennas available from just as many places. Considering how many new techs let their licenses lapse because here is nobody to hold a qso with on the "tech frequencies, it would also supply an "on the air" place and chance for thousands of established hams to shape the future of our hobby, and help restore the esteem that once accompanied the name "Elmer". So, what do you think?

heh. yeah, I've seen that as well. seems like a lot of the questions are being weighted this way (either by intent or just accidentally).
well, actually, this is not a bad suggestion. in fact, to carry it further, ***ign a small (like 50 khz) chunk of each HF band to "no-coders" and if they want more, they need to learn the code. this gets them participating and perhaps (just a wish here) LEARNING!
very true.
most of the real hams also had this talent for building a lot of their own equipment (and yeah, I do miss being able to do that).
sounds like some good ideas (I hope you don't mind if I expanded on a few of them though).

I've never seen anything published.

youd think the ARRL would be able to find a way to amke any result look good makes you wnder since they haven't

Welp, I really wanted to know if hams are actually taking these courses and if the courses were of high quality.
And the most I got was some noise about how the ARS has been dumbed down.
But at the end of the day, those schreeching loudest that the ARS has been dumbed down haven't availed themselves to the ARRL smartening-up methods.

Count of what days? How long you can do the RHM Two Step?
As for the validity of this thread as a "poll", it's about as accurate a "poll" as asking a stop sign for directions.
I think it was Jim, N2EY, who did the math and showed where the actual number of US licensed participants in the whole newsgroup represented less than 0.012% of the valid US licenesees (Sorry if it wasn't you, Jim....) SO far, there's only been five correspondants in this thread. Two of whom represent 40% of the Feeble Five, neither of which have even a day's worth of experience or competency in any of the "courses" offered. If anyone here needed to answer in the affirmative on any of these issues, it was you two...

Steve did say that people who shoot off their mouth might have their tires slashed, a brick thrown through their window, or their wife terrorized. Right here on RRAP he said that.
Not much of importance going on here. Hasn't been since '98.
